Woo Hoo! New Parts Update

I scored some major deals on Ebay the last 2 days. I've got a 73 Mercury 650 w/ no spark and a starter that froze up on me while troubleshooting. Well I found and won a good used starter for $9.99, a new after market switchbox and coil replacement for $99.00 and a good used stator for $15.50 and all the various shipping charges of course. I'd budget $300 for parts and only spent $150 on 3 major parts. Hopefully when they all show up I'll have a running motor in no time.

I was able to get compression readings before the starter stuck and all 3 cyl showed 120 psi so I figure the motor is worth investing a little time and money to bring it back to life. Wish me luck in the meantime.

Ok so I got the new solid state switchbox and starter installed and woo hoo we have spark!:D After priming the bulb and trying unsuccessfully getting the motor to start we poured some mixed gas into a spray bottle, sprayed some fuel directly into the carbs and presto it came to life. Looks like my next step is to buy some carb kits and get the fuel worked out.

Boy do I feel stupid. I couldn't figure out earlier today why when the motor would start it seemed to immediately ramp up to WOT. Well after reading the operators manual a little more thoroughly I discovered this important tip in parenthesis. "On Merc 650 only, return warmup lever to a position midway between full and down". I had it all the way full up. On the plus side the motor peed water like a champ.:D
