Thanks to "What floats your boat" post I was able to send this link to my friend.
http://www.sugarpinewoodcarving.com/store.asp

Not being able to find a replacement set of pistol grips (match shooting type) over the last ten years My fishing partner took up wood carving to try to replace them. Originals were stolen 30 years ago. And no one makes them anymore
I think he should make a copy from something soft first to get them to fit and look right. After that then carve on the Black Walnut!

I gave him some cedar but even with that he has new cuts every week.

I'm thinking a rectangular block of wax like you might buy to melt for candles. Use a hair dryer to soften up one side and press against the gun and let cool. This would let him know exactly what the inside should look like.
Then carve away everything that doesn't look like a pistol grip

He is ten years my elder and can't afford to lose much more blood, and I'm too darn old to break in another partner :D :D

Thanks in advance

How about some modeling clay? Can be molded and shaped without a knife, and it retains it shape pretty well. That way you can even have finger grooves that will be completely custom to you and your particular grip.

Morini makes target grips as well as grip compound. The grip compound is a 2 part product sort of like modeling clay. You could carve the grips close to what you need & then use the grip compound to customize the final fit. www.pilkguns.com
