Wood deck replacment

Hey yall,
I just pulled the carpet on a boat I recently bought and found that my deck is rotten out. I was wondering if I was to take it in instead of doing it myself how much am I going to be looking at on a little 16ft runabout? I am guessing that the stringers are most likely rotted to. So if I was to take it in and get both the stringers and deck replaced at the same time what will I be looking at as far as a estimate price?

hi....merry christmas.....

and welcome to i boats.

deck replacement 16 foot ob.....approx 1000....(cheap job) - 1500.

but your foam and stirngers are most likely gone as well....= 2000 -2500.

dyi....800 and approx 80-100 man hours.

2500 for both deck and stringers or 2500 for just the stringers plus the 1500 for deck?

25 is a cheap job for the deck and stringers...cheap means hack.

the hours involved are large......the materials are around 800....add a bit more for foam.

i have seen it quoted as high as 8k.

i would do the job around 3-3.5k.
but you can guess there will be some transom issues.....thats lots more hours

Jolly. I guess I will go ahead and ask how much more would be added for a transom?

if you are in there....as a pro....about 800.....(materials arent that much more)
if you do it your self...just add 30 hrs and 50 bucks

Well sounds like a darn big job with lots of things I could screw up in the process. Thanks for the help. I guess I will start getting quotes next week from local places.

its not that tough to do....just time and labor.....this forum can guide you right thru it...the more you read here ....the better off you are

by the way.....the costs mentioned are more than likely worth more than the boat...thats why people do it themselves

I can't think of too many 16' runabouts that would be worth having this work done professionally to. It's pretty much DIY or find another boat.

Well I ripped some of the wood decking up to see the stringers where the main rot to the deck was. I stood on the stringers and they held my weight (I am 200) and hit the ones I had access to with a hammer. They looked and sounded pretty solid. How do I figure out if the stringers are rotted? I hit the transom with the back of a flashlight. Sounded the same everywhere I hit. I put the engine up (outboard) and shook the engine up and down... I didn't hear any cracking and I did not really see any flexing in the transom. I was shaking the entire boat on the trailer. I am trying to figure out what all needs to be done. I am trying to figure out if the stringers and transom are ok or not FOR SURE and make sure that the deck is the only thing rotted and needs to be replaced. Any ideas how to confirm?

You can drill holes in the transom (from the inside) and stringers and examine the shavings that come out. If it looks like wood, you're probably good. If it's black and wet you got rot. Seal the holes back up with a dab of 3M 5200 or 4200.

Ok well stringers are rotted... I am trying to figure out if I was to start this how would I start? The boat is a bowrider. The wood deck (that is glassed) goes under the dual consoles all the way up to the bow from what I can see. There is no way I can just pull it out. The only way I can think of getting to it and the stringers is to cut the top of the boat off. I can imagine that being what I would have to do. So... Where do I start? How do I get down to it?

It's called popping the cap. Your boat is in 2 halves connected under the rub rail. There are an all time high number of great threads going on right now any one of which will show you exactly what you need to do.

i have been trying to read it all. the part that confuses me is that the rubber bumper stops back near the transom. so the cap looks like it stops. do i have to cut the rest of the way?

Ok so I just looked at the cap of my boat. I want to remove it Friday so I am trying to get my mind wrapped around it. The cap looks to turn into one peice at the transom at the rear of the boat like I said. Is there really two separate pieces but is covered up by the gelcoat? I am unsure how to separate that one part. Any ideas?

It varies by boat...construction at the transom, that is. The expert restorers here can help you out a lot if you can post some pix of what you're dealing with. One of the best resto threads on the forum for the same kind of boat is the Skanky Beast restore by JasonJ...I think it resides in the finished boat/project forum now. It will show you step by step how it is done on a bow rider and the result was mucho excellent.

Well I looked at the site that was in that thread said about. It looks some what similar but that one looks like there is a cap all the way around. Here is a picture of the back of mine. You can see where the bumper stops. What yall think?

Perhaps the splash well is all part of the cap
