Wood Finishes?

Well the 'ol finish on the wooden parts on my fiberglass boat are peeling, and need redone.

What type of finish is best for full water and sun exposure? Of course it will be covered when not in use, but I don't want to have to do it again real soon!

Thanks for any help!

Re: Wood Finishes?

I've use Ports marine finish on my teak bits for many years, a light sanding, then 2 coats usually lasted 5-6 seasons. Unfortunately, I don't think it's available anymore. Look for something specifically made for wood in weather extremes. When my tin of Ports is empty, I might try Behr waterproofing stain. It stands up very well on my outdoor deck.

Good old Varnish. The best is made by Epifanes

My preference is a combo of West system epoxy (their 207 hardener which cures water clear and has UV filters built in) and a good quality marine varnish (Petit or Epifanes). 2 full coats of the epoxy and 2 full (un-thinned) coats of varnish will last quite a while (2-3 years before touch-ups / maintenance coats are needed).

I haven't even had the boat in the water with the wood redone, but I went with the Cetol Natural, and the Cetol Gloss. I plan to keep and eye on how it holds up, but I really hope it lasts a few seasons with some scuffing and a coat of clear per year.

Sand it down with 120 grit paper and use 2-3 coats Epiphanes or Cabots. I MUST have GOOD UV resistance.

I just finished a video on a variation of varnishing teak (an epoxy / varnish combo that I mentioned in a previous post). Link is in my signature below. Have always had great results and the appearance is unbeatable. :p
