Hi, Im trying to fix up my 16' sea nymph aluminum V hull. It came factory with a wooden floor, but now its rotted out. I cant get "marine grade" plywood here, so I will have to use Treated Plywood. What would be the best product to seal the wood so it doesnt turn into a big rotton sponge? Would Thomsons Water Seal work? Thanks

If you do a search on this subject you will find plenty on it. There has been some question if pressure treated ply will react with aluminum. I just did mine with marine ply and covered it with West System Epoxy and then carpet. I think a few coats epoxy over standard ply would hold up in most cases. No expert here just an opinion. Have fun!

I asked the guys at West Marine in Dallas about that; they recommended marine grade plywood painted with as many coats of epoxy as it would absorb, and heating with a heat lamp would make it absorb more. They also said the polyester resin would do fine since that epoxy is out of this world expensive. Supposedly better than pressure-treated & I believe 'em.<br /><br />I found a place with marine ply but it's very expensive. Did some research, found that plywood marked "EXT" or "exterior grade" is made with waterproof glue. Probably better, but I bet rockchalk is right.<br /><br />"Marine Grade" theoretically is same as exterior grade except it has no interior voids. Any other grade will eventually rot and/or delaminate eventually (could be years if protected from the elements)from the moisture already present in the interior.<br /><br />I just used standard construction grade plywood primed & painted with Rustoleum. No carpet. But I'm just looking to get couple years out of it, planning to remodel soon anyway. After a year it's still looking good. Whenever I get around to a permanent installation I'll probly look for EXT grade & follow rockchalk's procedure.

When I did the floor in the Barge that you see in the pic.<br /><br />I used 1/2" P/T Plywood,... And left it as rivited down for a year..... Really Aired it Out....<br /><br />Then the following year I Splashed it with Epoxy,+ sand,... Painted it with Rustolium for the Color,+ UV Protection........<br /><br />That was in 2000,.... No Problems so far......<br />I think I'd do the sand differently next time.......

Home Depot -EXT. AC 1/2 plywood, 2 coats of exterior grey paint, pool carpet, cut pile so the hooks come out easier, and stapled / Nickel finish staples. Soaked on and off every year since 1988. Perfect today.
