I recently replaced my transom coreing with regular exterior 1 plywood. Should I have used pressure treated wood? Will my transom rot? I have it encased in fiberglass. Any insight would help me alot.

Thanks

Is pressure treated plywood from Lowes good for boats anyway? Will resin even stick it?

Presure treated wood rots. I've got lots of it around my yard in varying states of decay.

It contains poisons to repel termites and other insects, but you don't have them on boats anyway.

For my transom, I used exterior plywood, and soaked it with resin.

Why would pressure treated rot if its laying around your yard in the open air?

I use it to border ivy beds. The moisture under the ivy is what destroys the wood. It rots after only 4 or 5 years, despite 40 year claims. When the arsenic leaches out, then the insects finish it off.

Re: Wood for transom?

I used to be a residential builder and worked with pressure treated lumber quite a bit. There are different grades of pressure treated and variations in the amount of treatment. Some was more heavily treated for use below grade. If it was not treated for use below grade it would rot in a few years. The problem is, the treatment makes the wood wet. I used to have to paint or stain it occassionally and the finish would not take until the wood was dry enough to allow the paint to adhere or the stain to soak in. I believe this is the concern with using it in boats. The resin will not soak in as long as the wood is too moist. Also, for residential work the pressure treated plywood is generally a low grade, CDX or worse with few plys and lots of voids. It also can warp badly as it dries. In a post last week in the "project boats" section was a link to an article on marine plywood that was pressure treated and then redried. This would be ok.

Best regards,
RCS

Blynch,

Welcome to iBoats! Not sure why you are reviving such an old thread. Cabinet grade ply is not constructed using waterproof glue. Any water exposure will cause delamination of the plys regardless of what you treated it with. I suggest you search the restoration forum about this topic. There will be tons of information regarding plywood and other boat construction materials and methods.
