Re: WooHoo we made it!
I now own a 1988 SmokerCraft 15' Alaskan with a '88 28SPL E'rude.
For those who do not know, this boat was manufactured with aluminum bench seats and designed for a tiller motor. Not the most comfortable boat, but better than the old 1967 12' deep-V AeroCraft I also own.
When it was new, the dealer installed an aftermarket side console with controls for the 28hp 'rude.
This boat looked like crap when I bought it (cheap) but the engine runs great and I'm in the process of giving the boat a major overhaul.
To date I have removed the console and fabricated a new one and replaced and all the electrical. The boat now sports a short deck in the bow so I can mount a trolling moter. I have already sanded most the paint off the hull, and will be doing the rest shortly, followed by sealing all the seams and rivits with GluVit, and a new paint job.
The original owner used the boat for a ferry to his cabin on a major Michigan inland lake to get to his cabin on an island. In 1995 it endured a terrible storm and suffered a lot of damage. This left the paint job in very sad shape, and both gunnels had to be replaced before it could be used again. He had the gunnels done and left the rest alone. The boat leaks terribly due to the rough time it endured tied at the dock (and under the dock). The transom pounded the bottom of the lake enough to create a 2" long crack in the hull where the transom joins it.
Tightening the rivits, reinforcing the crack with another layer of aluminum and Marine-Tex Epoxy, GluVit, and paint should seal her up pretty good.
This boat will never look like new, but it'll look pretty darn good and be quite an inexpensive reliable fishing boat when it is done.
