Re: WooHoo we made it!

Greetings Ratracer!
It will be interesting to see how many SmokerCraft hits we get. I have a 2002 Smoker Stealth 162 with a 2001 50hp 4stroke which I have been very happy with. If I understand correctly, Starcraft is also now owned by Smoker Craft. I have noticed some of the models have switched between the brands. I like all three, the Sylvans, Starcrafts and SmokerCrafts. Starcraft and Sylvan both have there own fans. I see Starcraft has their own forum now, Syvan is probably not far behind. Which Syvan do you have?
RCS

I have a 2001 Smokercraft Osprey.

It has a Yamaha 50hp main and a Honda 8hp kicker. Its set up for salmon fishing in Puget Sound with electric downriggers, Garmin 276C GPS, Lowrance X107CDF fishfinder, Icom 402s VHF and a Trollmaster remote throttle control for the kicker.

Overall I'm happy with it. I use it very hard in the salt water almost every weekend all year long. It does have a few loose rivets but has held up pretty good for what I put it through.

There are a few pics of it in the link below.

Re: WooHoo we made it!

Myself I have an old boy, it is a 1994 SomkerCraft ProMag 162 and it is set with a Force 1998 engine 75-HP. I bought it 3 years ago and so far I am happy with this boat it is solid - handling good - stable and OK for my needs. I also have a kicker Erude 4.5-HP that runs like a clock and bow mount MinnKota 50 lbs.trust. What else could a fisherman ask ? :p

Mario ;)

Re: WooHoo we made it!

I have a 2003 1600 Explorer DC with a 4-stroke 75HP Yamaha. Overall I'm very happy with the boat but I ended up with a 75HP because it was a package deal and the price was unbeatable. If I were buying a-la-carte I would have gone with a 60HP because of the weight.

rshnack, have you seen anything definitive about Smokercraft taking over Starcraft? I know some of the models look almost identical - some Monark models do too - which makes me wonder if the ownership of some of these companies is muddled, or is one of these companies manufacturing some models for the others?

Re: WooHoo we made it!

ratracer,

I may be mistaken. I could of sworn that I saw news of the purchase on the Smokercraft website a few years ago. Now I see no record of it anywhere. Maybe Smokercraft just bought some stock in Starcraft when they reorganized.
RCS

Re: WooHoo we made it!

As the name implies, I've got a 1996 175 Ultima pushed by a 115 Mariner. Replaced the subflooring on the front platform but I think it was bad due to neglect by previous owner. Love the boat and motor too. Can't be happier.

Re: WooHoo we made it!

Hello there gents. I am about to replace my 05 16 Profish DC. [ugly incident late in the year]it had a 90 2stk Yam and the new 06 I am thinking to put a 90 four stk instead. I did not find a problem with weight with my 05, do you think I will have some with the diff of nearly 140lbs hanging of the back?

gnfshn,

I guess I should check this part of the forum more. Things have been pretty quiet so I haven't been checking. I have a SmokerCraft 162 with a 50 HP four stroke Merc. My boat is only rated for 60HP but the hull shape is almost identical to yours. I think an extra 140lbs. would make it tail heavy. Maybe you can get the dealer to let you take a trial run in a boat set up with the heavier motor?
RCS

Re: WooHoo we made it!

Not an owner but might and hope to be very soon. Been shopping for a newer used boat that would keep the wife happy and provide some fishing in comfort....Dual Con, a top and so on. I seem to end up looking at either a Sylvan or Smokercraft.

I'm off to look at a 1996 17.5' Smokercraft Ultima (I think that is the model), motor is a 96 115 2S Mariner. Hopefully its as clean as the guy claims!

Worried slightly about the weight of the 115 and overall package weight. I drive a Xterra which is under powered! Can anyone estimate the towing weight?

I'd ask for opinions on the boat but the posts above speak volumns!

Safe boating!
Theo

Re: WooHoo we made it!

I had a 1982 Sylvan 16ft with 50HP Johnson. Was a great boat and when I sold it in 2003 it still never leaked a drop. All things considered I would say that was the best boat / motor combo I have ever owned. The newer ones have a lot more useable space and all of that but for useability that 82 was as good as any boat I've ever seen. By the way I sold it and bought a 1990 Spectrum with a 90 Force. Great boat horrible motor!

Re: WooHoo we made it!

I now own a 1988 SmokerCraft 15' Alaskan with a '88 28SPL E'rude.

For those who do not know, this boat was manufactured with aluminum bench seats and designed for a tiller motor. Not the most comfortable boat, but better than the old 1967 12' deep-V AeroCraft I also own.

When it was new, the dealer installed an aftermarket side console with controls for the 28hp 'rude.

This boat looked like crap when I bought it (cheap) but the engine runs great and I'm in the process of giving the boat a major overhaul.

To date I have removed the console and fabricated a new one and replaced and all the electrical. The boat now sports a short deck in the bow so I can mount a trolling moter. I have already sanded most the paint off the hull, and will be doing the rest shortly, followed by sealing all the seams and rivits with GluVit, and a new paint job.

The original owner used the boat for a ferry to his cabin on a major Michigan inland lake to get to his cabin on an island. In 1995 it endured a terrible storm and suffered a lot of damage. This left the paint job in very sad shape, and both gunnels had to be replaced before it could be used again. He had the gunnels done and left the rest alone. The boat leaks terribly due to the rough time it endured tied at the dock (and under the dock). The transom pounded the bottom of the lake enough to create a 2" long crack in the hull where the transom joins it.

Tightening the rivits, reinforcing the crack with another layer of aluminum and Marine-Tex Epoxy, GluVit, and paint should seal her up pretty good.

This boat will never look like new, but it'll look pretty darn good and be quite an inexpensive reliable fishing boat when it is done.
