my mate took his boat out the other day and mixed his oil and petrol wrong, instead of 50:1 he did it 30:1 somehow and used about 15 litres os the mix before noticing , would this have done damage? as it still runs fine and compression is still good

Re: woops

30:1 is way better than 70:1 or 100:1 or NONE as it is more oil rather than less. It will do no harm. Just be a bit smokey. If you continue to run it like this, it will carbon up sooner.
New outboards used to begin with 25:1 ratio until run in and then decrease to 50:1 (trivia)

SORRY i got those ratios wrong, all i know is he added 300ml of oil to 22 litres of fuel, is that bad? dont know what the ratios would work out to

Re: woops

He made the ratio 73.5 :1
To 22 litres, he should add 440ml
300ml for 22 lites = 22,00ml /300ml = 73.3
22,000ml /440ml =50.0

Check here.
http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/oil_gas.html

Probably a USA 6 gallon tank 22.7 L where you add 460ml
5 litres - add 100ml
10 litres - 200ml
20 lites - 400 ml

Get a clear plastic container and mark these amounts on the side. That way he only has to add petrol and pour in the required qty for the amount.
Works for me.
I don't think much damage would have been done.
Was there stabilser added, coz it has a small amount of upper cylinder lubricant which would have helped ?

Re: woops

thanks for the info, he didnt run stabliser but it seems to run ok..he was very lucky, as his miscalculated how much oil to pour out of a 1 litre bottle with those crappy markings. better to do what u suggested!!

Re: woops

I think the NMMA TCW 3 test includes running outboards at 100:1 for 100 hours. To pass the test, the cylinders must be free of scuffing. So... if your mate was running TCW 3 oil at 73:1 for just a short time he is likely OK, compression test confirms no severe damage. Good Luck.

Re: woops

Hello
at 73/1 and no real hard use it probably is not hurt. one of my customers got mixed up on a motor I sold him, a rebuilt 89 model evinrude 88spl. he thouhgt he was supposed to finnish the breakin at 50/1 then switch to 100/1. he ran it like that for a year and I only found out about it because the caretaker at the hunt club called me after arguing with him:) so good luck and keep posting and remember sometimes blind luck is way better than pure skill :)
