I'm sure everyone knows when painting with these volatile paints you need to take every precaution you can.I got sick painting my boat with polyurethane paint.I thought i had taken every precaution I could but I missed something important.I purchased the correct mask, tyvex suit, nitril gloves,a bandana for the back of my neck and a hat,but I missed this. I wear glasses and I wore goggles over them but they immediately fogged my glasses so I removed them, didn't think anything of it.Thought I was getting a cold but that wasn't it. I had poisoned myself through absorbsion in the mucous membranes and exposed skin around my eyes.Pretty scary dudes.Iv'e painted with some nasty stuff before;emron, centari with hardner, epoxies, but this stuff got me.Not enough to take me out but put me down for a few days and i'm still recovering. When they say to use a pressurized suit DO IT !! (I found this out after the fact) or get it to someone who has the facilities. I know we all are doing these renovations on a budget and because we can do all of it ourselves but it is not worth one person getting sick doing it.It is a little embarrasing for me to tell anyone about it because I thought I knew better, but if it keeps one person from getting sick so be it. So stay safe so we can put some more tin in the water. Thanks JimmyJ

Dang Jimmy, hope your feeling better. Thanks for the info. Don't worry about getting embarrassed, you may have just saved someone from a worse outcome. If I were to worry about being embarrassed I would never have much to say on here:redface: I think I'll stick with simpler paints, not as dangerous. My worst thing was spending the day with the stripper. (no, not that one)
I have spent about 7 hrs removing paint, but I kept the garage door open and a fan going.
Now, where did I put those headache pills?

Yea,I found out it takes about 10 minutes for this stuff to get completly through your bloodstream and can take a while to get through your system. It left me just plain wore out, lathargic throat sore basically feel like crap almost like the flu.It just made me realize how dangerous it is.And I did this outside.Still got topside to do but you better believe more care will be taken.

Thanks for the warning. I've never painted anything so this is a good post for me to read. What kind of paint were you using?

Yeah, no need to feel embarassed, hope you feel better now. My experience like this was that I got sick for 3 days from sanding paint/aluminum with a palm sander outside in the breeze, with no mask or anything. Felt like crap, lungs hurt, coughed a lot. You can bet I've been more careful since. I thought I'd be OK because the breeze was blowing the dust away. That was a miscalculation!

The paint is polyurethane and the thinner is xylene. It is extremely dangerous to your health so be extremely careful using these paints.

a lot of these types of paints use compounds called polyisocyanates, against which masks are ineffective....this is why they recommend the pumped in air system. those aren't as pricey as you might think....i think Eastwood has one for <$500. and as i say when justifying the cost of motorcycle riding gear, that's less than the first 30 min at the doctor!

you just ejjicated me....i thought that working outside pretty much would get away from such issues. thanks.

i'm with fishngho....think i may stick with rustoleum and just re-scuff n squirt as needed every few years.

I used to paint old and new dump trucks. One year we used xylene to save $ but research by me and a buddy found out all the birth defects and danger from using xylene instead of enamel reducer. Never use that stuff again.
