I'm replacing all the gaskets & seals on lower unit of a 1960 Johnson Seahorse.
My problem is the actual seals...I can't get them out! I have a Chilton manual, but it doesn't tell how to remove them....just to replace them.
Is there a special too for this or should I just bring the parts to a machine shop or outboard repair shop. B.T.W. I'm located in MN, so if any locals have advice on somewhere here to go, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

You could try bending an ice pick tip 180 degrees like a hook. You can insert this through the hole in the seal and yank the seal out. It will damage the old seal, but it doesn't matter really.

Good idea, but these things almost seem like they were pressed in.

The seals are a tight fit,but because they are installed with sealer on the metal to metal surface, gentle heat will help their removal.I've got a slide hammer set up that works well, but still have to sometimes use a punch to collapse the seal to remove it.If this is needed I use a 1/4 round punch after bevelling the tip on a grinder. Then I drive the seal shell inwards towards the center.GENTLY. Ah, yes. I remember now. When I rebuilt my '69 20hp LU I had the same problem with the propshaft seal. I collapsed it with a chisel like the other folks said and pulled it out. It wasn't easy.

There is a seal puller for that job. If you take it to an OMC dealer they will pull them out for you. I use a 3 pronged seal puller used for removing bicycle bearing races. It works great. I got it at my local hardware supplier.

You will also need a special punch to remove and replace the shift rod bushing and seal.

You can also use a 5/16 coarse tap on the shift rod bushing.Cut two or three threads into it,screw in a bolt, and drive out from opposite side.Replace bushing if rod is a loose fit.
DHP
