Hi all,
I'm interested in building a little kayak with my son using fiber glass. The kayak we are considering is just the sit on top and not the one where you put your feet in the the hull. So the kayak will be completely enclosed with a seat on top. We saw one at costco for about $500 or so but it was plastic. Anyway, Do we go about building this kayak by using floation foam, shape it and then lay fiberglass on top? Do we actually need the foam? Thank you for your insight.

As I mentioned on another post, most foams will desolve if put into contact with resins. You have to sheild it with something first, Not sure what?

Polyester resin melts foam, epoxy resin doesn't.

It will be difficult to build a kayak for less than you can buy one for. Chesapeake kayaks kits cost more than the rotational Cosco type poly kayaks and are more fragile. Decent used poly kayaks can be found for around $300-$500 across the county.

Here's a good web site to learn about kayaking and kayaks for sale http://www.paddling.net/
