I saw that one today, too, but don't have any more info than you do. It's interesting-looking, though.

Re: World Outboard on Ebay??

It's a late 1970s Yamato 80. Approx. 20-cubic inches, almost 30 hp. Used in Perimutual betting in Japan, re-manufactured, and then exported 'round the world. Similar/later models are the Yamato 101, 102, 202, and the currently available 302. All of the X02 series motors are about 24-cubic inches.

The Y80s are used in the APBA 20SS knee-jockey class (running stock), as well as the B-Modified Hydro class (running pipes). They are not for the faint of heart and a good 20SS hydro running pump gas will nose the 70mph mark!

More at www.seattleoutboard.org/Yamato%20Engine%20Chronology.html

- Scott

Re: World Outboard on Ebay??

The block looked like a really old fastwin or something to me at first. Their '56 looks more modern to me than the '70s ones. On the other hand, the lower unit really says something doesn't it. :D
Thanks for sharing!

Scali, those must not be air-cooled since there's no fins on head or block, and usually air-cooled engines have a ducted shroud over the flywheel which is used as a fan to help cool the engine. Those look more enclosed.
I think the pickup is integrated into the exhast 'tail' behind the prop, a la J/Ed's of the 50s-70s.

Hi Guys,
Yes, the pickup consists of one or two (depending on model) rams in the exhaust snout out the back of the leg. It's a force-feed system - only works when you're moving. There is no waterpump, per se. Needless to say, they don't pump much when idling along.
The earliest model Yamatos were basically Mercury KG7H clones. The Japanese literally copied the first ones part for part. They learned quickly and improved on the American designs with each evolution.
The later ones that are still in use today (80, 102 and 302) are VERY nice motors. They are about as bulletproof a motor as you will find anywhere. They are very overbuilt, well made motors.
Here's a shot of me running my Y102 a few years back. ..
- Scott
Most excellent, Chinewalker! Nice photo, too.

That motor is only up to $102 so far, with three days to go. Someone may get a real bargain, there, although someone has posted something about this discussion and suggested that it might be valuable.

Thanks for the info, and be careful out there. Now I see where the name came from.

For those still interested, add a www. to this url:

boatracingr11.com/Sorensen_boats/sorensen_yamato_eng.htm

Exploded views of the Yamato 80 and other Yamato outboards are there, along with parts lists, etc. Very cool.

Hello Chinewalker, what is your position in the boat. Is your feet in front of you? Looks like a blast.

Hi Monoshock,
We call it the "plywood prayer", as you're on you're knees. In the event of a spill (not a question of if, but when) you need to be able to make a quick exit. The kneel down position also helps with boat control as you really have to manhandle these boats, particularly in traffic. If the bow pops up you grab a handful of steering wheel and push it back down. In the turns you're leaning way out the port side, chin of the helmet almost kissing the water, rolling the boat up on the inside chine. It's a workout like no other, but MAN, OH MAN what a ride...

- Scott

Yup - all kneel-down racing boat throttles are on the left - 'cuz you turn left. ..

- Scott

Re: World Outboard on Ebay??

Here is a shot of my Mark 20H Cornpopper... Also give you an idea of round-turning. Lots of runabout hulls now being built are called "floaters" or "hydrobouts" with wider bottoms and dagger type turn fins. They flat turn, rather than round turn with the fins holding the lane rather than the chine. Round turning turns are tighter, but you bleed off a lot of speed to do it. The flat turn guys take a wider loop through the turns but are able to stay on the throttle the whole way through. My hulls are both late 1980s early 1990s tech. Still marginally competitive, but showing their age...

- Scott

Aha! Well, more than I would have given for it without hearing it run.
