IMO your cam is broke in, doing the break-in procedure again for the lifters is fine, but don't think its necessary. Soaking the lifters before installing is the way to go, and adding zinc will never hurt

Hey guys, sorry it took me so long to post but I did throw a new set of lifters in and adjust my valves( which I had to) and its back alive and running better than it ever did! I never had the motor this smooth or quiet, being I keep the boat In the water close to my house I got to run the hell out of it(taking it easy on it the first couple trips) I probably put 50 or 60hrs on it. I do have a very slight rocker chatter at idle for the first 2 min or so after start up but its barely even noticeable (I'm the only that can hear it) so when I pull it in the next couple of weeks I'll adjust the rocker running to lose the slight chatter. I just wanna thank everyone who posted to help the info was a great help THANKS ALOT

Are they hydraulic lifters or solid? You might have had the one that wouldn't spin before a tad too tight. which will also cause it to run rough. They spin because the lifters aren't centered on the cam lobe, they're offset just a tad & that causes them to spin in their bore, unless they're too tight. Glad you got it running good again. Sometimes it's hard to get that last little chatter out of an old motor, especially if it runs solid lifters, those are a bit noisier than hydraulic lifters. We put a new cam/ lifters & timing gears in our old 140 a couple years ago & I still can't get that last little bit of chatter out. No one else hears it but I do. I think it's a wonky rocker arm or bushing but it runs good & it's just barely noticeable so I leave it be. Good job getting it running smoothly again.
