It was in the mid 60's temps so I took the boat out a couple miles last Monday to check a GPS and fishfinder installation from a shop they had just finished. I trailered it about 3 miles to the ramp and back. The electronics installed wasn't quite working right so I took it back to them and dropped the boat off leaving it on the trailer of course. I left the motor up enough to rest on the kick stop. I just don't remember getting it vertical out of the ramp to fully drain. Temperatures are dropping into the 20's here tonight.

I tired to go by there but the gate was closed to this marina only letting those inside who would have a card. I don't keep my boat there so I don't have an entry card for the electric gate. The repair shop facility is also inside the gate and they keep all the boats inside too. I drove there in the dark and didn't read any emergency numbers and none were offered when called the marina's main or regular number.

Anyway, there is a remote possibility the shop took the boat inside but not likely.

If not, is this a certain catastrophe? Maybe trailering it sloshed enough water out to prevent freeze damage at this up angle? This motor ran so well, great compression and low wear on it, I'm going to be sick if it is damaged. Anyone know if there are freeze plugs or how sensitive this motor is to freeze damage at that angle? Any idea of the repair costs if it is screwed?

the power head will be fine, it's the lower unit, that is the concern.

most lilky even the lower unit is fine. the pump drain holes are in the front so usually, unless sand plugged, it drains anyway. as the exhaust hole isnt closed the ice can expand harmlessly.
I dont suspect you will have any issues.
would have been better to lower the engine but I see it here all the time.

Well, I think it's OK. When I got back there that day it was just above freezing...a saw that the tiny weep hole in the lower unit was clear and open draining a little when I moved the motor...there was some water that came out of the exhaust when I ran it down to vertical, but as you said, that area had room to freeze/expand. I was told by the mechanic there that the top end drains as soon as you shut the engine down while it is still in the water, so that was protected.

It survived being owned by a noob.

Thanx for the posts and information. It encouraged me with hope. I thought boating for this season was out the window.
