My man Smithy in the other forum was showing us pictures of what he just did to his baby. Sad, sad, sad, but with a little lovin i'm sure she will survive, better then new. Might even get some paint on the insurance company's dime.

No one wants a paint job thet way, so i said to myself; myself what was the worse thing, myself hit with MY BABY.

Not counting docks, i myself hit a floating wooden picknick table with the side long seats. It was floating in the Raritain bay. I have hit many wooden skids.
Oh plastick lawn chairs galore.

um, we got caught in a squall in the ICW in FL and took a metal channel marker through the front beam of the 50' cat my dad built.

Not a pretty sight.

Re: Worse thing you hit in the water ?

We went fishing at a little place called loafer's bend on Lake Whitney, TX. It got dark and we navigated our way back to to the state park boat ramp under a pitch black sky slowly and without incident. The next morning we got up at day break and headed for the same spot. It looked clear ahead but I noticed alot of tree stumps growing out of the water port side. I called out to my wife "hey honey, look at all those trees we could have hit last night! We got really lucky!" Then I returned my attention ahead and BAM!! A lone little stump sticking up about 6 inches gashed me up good. Now, not only am I a much more cautious boater, I might be a little bit too gun shy because of it. I'll get back to my old ways one day.

I have skegged a couple of rocks on Lake Of The Woods when the water was a couple feet lower than the charts indicated. Banged up the skeg once. Second time it merely nicked the SS SkegGard over the straightened skeg.

When I was still at home in high school, my dad had a 17' Glassmaster 120/Mercruiser. We was cruising at WOT down the Hocking river in southern Ohio. Went around a slight bend and BAM! My girlfriend and I was in the jump seats, our moms sitting behind the our dads that were in the front. ALL of us ended up against the windshield. We sat in the water listening for water rushing in.....nothing. Dad raised the outdrive and then we started drifting with the current and then we could see a submerged log about a foot in diameter. Dad looked the outdrive over and everything was ok. We cruised on down to the Ohio river where we did some water skiing. On the way back (at WOT), dad said he was going to hug the opposite side of the river so that we wouldn't hit the log. He did slow down to about 25 and then BAM! hit the same log again. Must have been an excellent boat because it didn't do one bit of damage except for breaking the seats loose from the floor. Another guy at the ramp had hit the same log and almost ripped his outdrive out of the transom.

Re: Worse thing you hit in the water ?

In my Skeeter I took a turn a bit too sharp at WOT during a tourney ... broke the skeg off on a known rock bar ... just too anxious to get to the fishing hole. I did gained a couple MPH!

Another time we were in Canada fishing (walk in only lake - mile and a half through a swamp to get there) in the outfitters tinnies with 6hp johnnies. Wind was blowing like crazy, white caps on 2-3 foot waves. Hit a rock with it and knocked a blade off the 3 blade prop. We were about 6 miles down wind AND current from the launch/walk-in area. I was worried! Engine had less vibration after the blade was knocked off than before. Fished the rest of the week with the prop that way!

A rock.......with my uncle's boat......2 weeks after he bought it.......less then 1 week before he was slated to take vacation to use it. That was bad.

Was about 60 feet off shore idling in 6 feet of water. Went to throttle up and go on plane when we hit a cypress knee. Never seen it since it was about 2 & 1/2 feet under the water. It nailed all three blades... this is the one that said new prop. I keep it on my desk as a trophy since it's the 1st prop I destroyed and I know it won't be the last!!!

A rock in the shallows of the Ohio river. I THOUGHT I knew where I was going but I found myself in very skinny water and lost a few inches off my skeg.

I was a newbie boater last year, so I'm not going to jinx things by saying in 30 times out I didn't... nope, I'm not going to say it. Nope, nope, nope!!!

when I was a teenager years ago, with my dads boat, a waterski someone had dropped. It was in the middle of the lake upside down. No damage to the boat, but the ski was worse for wear!!

That red head last time in Florida ! :D

Seriously , mine was the " blue plastic phantom " . Deepest part of the deepest hole on that section of river , I'm tooling along at full throttle (12 , MAYBE 13 MPH.. ) when BAM my motor kicks up and the negine is revving higher than a kite . I set the the motor back down , shift into nuetral , and restart it . Shifting into gear gets me nowhere , just an extra nuetral .

Crap , blew a sheer pin . No problem , I have many spares in my tackle box .
I tilt the motor up , grab the pliers , and pull the cotter pin .
Then I loosen the prop nut with the wrench , and unscrew the nut .
It is at this moment that coordination chose NOT to strike , and the nut falls from grasp into the murky depths .

Hey , no problem , I've got spares in my tackle box .

Somwhere ...

Gotta be here SOMEWHERE ! ...

SONOFA ...

It was a liesurely troll downstream , then a gentle , very slow float as my battery died , and night fell .

The fishing was decent , the sunset spectatcular .

~ 10PM I found the ramp , in the pitch black moonless night .
A few paddle strokes and I beached the boat , retrieved the truck , loaded up and drove the 5 minutes home .

Several days of searching turned up no replacements even from the Johnson dealers , so I bought standard hex nuts , cut goove around them , and cross-drilled them for the the cotter keys .

I now have a dozen spares , the hard way . :D

Re: Worse thing you hit in the water ?

When I was younger I took my mother for a nice casual stroll around our lake in my 14' aluminum (big old 6HP merc). As I looped around the cove we went airbourn, engine revving and all.. scared the begeezus out of us. Once the boat landed back into the water we both turned around. We had just cleanly jumped someone's dark blue raft floating about 3 inches above the water.

No damage to the boat or motor.. wasn't sticking around to assess the raft (more embarrassed than afraid) :/
