"I think they steal them for the platinum in there."

Yep That is why they are stolen. Those cats can be sold for $300+ a piece. It happens around here a lot. I had 1 stolen off my truck a couple years ago. Luckily I do not have any emission laws in the town i live in. So i just clamped a pipe in where it was.

Low life scumbags stole about a 2 dozen u-haul and other big gas box truck cats round here lately.

Big GM, Big Japanese. I'm sure if you know the right people everything is sold no questions asked.

Re: Worst Outing EVER!!!!

This last weekend my fishing pal and I decided to depart from our normal "home" lake and go Southeast to a reservoir called Tappan to do some fishing.

Weather showed a 20% chance of storms and I got off work early, so I took the family down to do some boating before my buddy showed up to fish the evening/overnight/and early Saturday morning.

I asked some questions on my facebook page pertaining to the particular lake I was going to (best place to launch, park, etc), and found out the watershed conservancy just redid some ramps on the main highway.

I pulled into the ramp area (wife and kids following me behind) and found out the ramps looked great but didn't have docks.. Knowing I couldn't get a 20' cabin cruiser in the water with myself, my wife, sister in law, and 2 kids, I went down the road to the other ramps by the marina.. I was greeted by a big "RAMP CLOSED" sign. Ugh

I ended up having to go to the campground 15 minutes away and pay $5/car only to find out that the ramps were "NOT FOR OVERNIGHT PARKING". Double ugh.

We get on the lake, the sky starts to blacken. We decide to go to the marina to get lunch and wait out the storm. Just as we're finishing lunch it hit.. Thunder, lighting, straight line winds, hail, the whole she-bang.

As we're getting ready to pay the check I hear a loud "bang" and see my 50' dock with mine and 8 other boats tied up break loose, swing into the fuel dock, hit a few other docked boats, and float out into the center of the lake. Another loud bang and a whole dock of paid slips breaks loose and slams into the fuel dock.

I start to freak, but am assured by the waitress "we'll take you out to get your boat, this happens all the time".. WHAT???!! I'd be seriously angry if my $40,000 boat docked at a $700/season slip broke loose on a regular basis.

I get my boat back, hit the bilge, everything is good. The wife wants to go, so I pick up my fishing buddy at the "new" ramps then drop the wife and kids off at the campground ramps.

I call the park office and explain that I want to night fish but don't know where to park. They explain that I "MUST" use the renovated ramps on the main highway. "Those are the overnight parking ramps". Ok.

My buddy drives my truck and trailer back to the ramps, I pick him up, and we're finally good to go fish.

Caught some bass and panfish. Waited out a few more storms overnight under a bridge. Wake up and fish for a few more hours. Everything is gravy.

I go back to the renovated ramps to get the boat on the trailer, start my truck, and "BAAAAWAAAAA".. SOMEONE CUT MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER OFF MY TRUCK OVERNIGHT.

I can't win for losin'. My insurance just cut me a check for $1055 (which is less $100 for my deductible) to get the truck fixed.

I won't be going back to that lake anytime soon.

Ugh.

That right there is a bad run of luck!

If you edited your post a bit, and threw in come catchy words,,, you'd have a country song...

Anytime soon
Anytime soon

I won't be goin back, to that lake,,, anytime soon

I thought about Tappan and West Branch this year before returning to Salt Fork. It's a bit further than Tappan but so much nicer I think.

But! did you drive home like that?

See, this is why I have a boat that isnt worth more than the gas it has in it.
If my boat was floating away, dock and all, I would sit back and watch the madness. And, the suckers can cut my CAT off all they want, most of its in the muffler anyway...

"IIRC, the favorite target of catcon thieves are Toyota trucks. Is that what you drive by chance? "

It's a Dodge Dakota..

And I won't be going back to Tappan.. West Branch is the lake that I boat the most and have NEVER had a problem. Salt Fork is nice as well. The similarity is they are both run by the State of Ohio.

That's a terrible story. Glad you survived it all. At least you have the story!

I have a friend who owns a very successful precious metals recycling business. I believe he deals mainly with electronics. However, I enjoy kidding him that what he really does is steal cat converters. :p

And, by the way, my fishing partner is a master mechanic.. He met me at the ramp so we had another vehicle. We were able to go down to the local Advance Auto Parts store, grab some pipe and a few clamps, and fix it right at the ramp parking area.

I'm really considering taking my vehicle to a local muffler shop that I've been made aware of and getting a piece of straight pipe welded in.. I don't have auto emissions testing in my area and this way I'll know it can never happen again..

Re: Worst Outing EVER!!!!

Hmm. I have a Dakota.

This isn't a vehicle specific type of crime. It is a crime of opportunity. They will yank a converter off of anything as long as they they feel "safe". The larger the converter the more money it will bring, so large trucks/SUVs/etc.. so they do tend to be targeted more than passenger cars, but this is not brand specific in any way.

The average price at the scrap yard for a converter is around $50. This fluctuates with market demand for platinum and its cousin palladium. The average price of platinum is $40/gram. The actual price can fluctuate wildly. The average cost of the slurry used to produce converters (not pure platinum) is $11,000/quart. The slurry cost came from a friend of mine who is a fuel systems engineer for one of the automotive companies and I have no way to verify it. The slurry is applied to a ceramic honeycomb monolith in an extremely thin film so a little goes a loooong way.

Park your vehicle in a well lit and secure area and you'll be fine. Since life doesn't always take us to well lit and secure areas make sure your insurance is paid up and roll the dice.

Late model vehicles with post converter monitoring will suffer in driveablility and fuel economy with a straight pipe in place of the converter. Your master mechanic friend should be able to fill you in on this.

He did, but its a 2000 model year.. Plus my downstream O2 hasn't worked properly for about 2 years so the check engine light has been constantly on. He's got a scanner so I know that O2 is the only code its throwing.....currently. Plus around March of next year I plan on upgrading to a fullsize.

And it is a crime of convenience.. Dakota's, F-150's, Toyota's (especially) are all at risk because of the height they sit while parked. If the vehicle is low to the ground chances are the CatCon thieves will pass it by because jacking it up takes too much time, too much effort, and is waaay to conspicuous.

Even though you don't have emissions testing in your area, it is a Federal crime to knowingly disable emissions controls that are Federally regulated. Toss a cat on that thing before you sell it. Failing to fix an o2 sensor when you sell it is no big deal. Knowingly selling it with a straight pipe can land you in serious trouble and it won't be long before the new owner is notified by the guy doing his oil change that he should pony up serious bucks to make his car legal. I've had to give this news to an unsuspecting car owner before. Not a good scene.
