Re: Worst towing story or accident.

A couple of years ago we came upon a full size Chevy van, you know the one with like 12 seats in it.. that had been towing a very nice bowrider... the van was off the sholder about 20ft.. the trailer was under the rear tires of the van, sideways... the boat (no kidding) was resting with the bow planted on the passenger side of the roof...the stern a bit on the sholder.. making a perfect T... I passed at 70... but to this day can't figure out how such a thing could happen..

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Bought a brand new camper. The "staff" placed my trailer so when I hooked up I was heading out the in lane. I swung wide to make it out, but a little too wide. $1000 repair bill before I got it out of the driveway. 3 weeks later a guy makes a comment about how well I backed it in at a campsite. I could only say "expensive lessons"....

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

A few months back, I was driving from Chicago back home to St. Louis.

About half a mile ahead of me, I see a trailer swaying back and forth VERY eratically. Had to investigate. Speed up, and see what's going on.

It's a dual axel flat bed trailer completely overloaded with metal.. in the FRONT of the trailer. And the back of the truck is equally overloaded. Such incredible tounge weight that the rear axel of the trailer is so high the back tires are 6 inches IN THE AIR. I speed up to about 90mph.. .pull over and grab the digi camera... as they pass, I catch up and take some pictures...as I'm on the phone with highway patrol.

Take a look at the shadows on the pictures to see.....

90 MPH huh? I don't know which is worse? The truck trailer combo, or you speeding. I've seen a bunch of weird setups going down the road and actually that doesn't seem that bad. True he could have had it balance out better. Maybe he was going to be on a toll road and didn't want to pay the extra axle fee. :D

yeah, the windshield was horible... bugs the size of birds...and they were all suicidal.

as for the driving 90.... everyone is driving 80 on that stretch of rd.... nomans land through the middle of Illinois, think I passed 2 cars while getting ahead of the guy. (trailer rig going 75)

pictures didn't do this justice, wish i had a camcorder. I spend a lot of time on the road, and I've never seen a trailer wag like that.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Not related to boats.

My boss used to race at the local speedway. One day, in an obvious hurry, he loads his car on his trailer and speeds off.

He built his racecar very low to the ground for the obvious advantage of a lower center of gravity. With the car being so low, he could not load it on the trailer without high-centering, even with very long ramps. His solution was to raise the back of the truck by backing on to a set of portable car ramps, tilting the trailer and allowing him to drive the car on. He put the ramps on the front of the trailer when he was done.

This particular time, he chained the front of the car, but forgot to chain the rear. As luck would have it, he nearly got into an accident and had to slam on the brakes. The car went foward, hit the portable ramps, and ended up in the bed of the truck, breaking the rear window in process.

I bet he never forgets to chain the rear of the car. :)

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

To a boater, there is almost no worse sight then your boat passing you while you are towing it. One day when my friend and I were coming back from a dive, going around a curve about 30-35 with my 15 foot glass tri hull. Next thing I know here is my boat right next to me, I coulda door checked it! I slow down and the boat goes along the road, spins around 6 times, and FINALLY comes to rest in someones yard. Afterwards a series of lucky things happened. For one, there were no other cars on the road(to prevent damage and humiliation  ) two, we had two dive tanks in the back corner of the boat standing up, imagine if she rolled and broke off them valves?!? three, a towtruck comes by as soon as we drove over to it. four, he helps us get it back on the trailer for free! five, a cop stops by but had something else to attend to. and best of all, the motor stayed up and no damage was done except for the keel being a little flatter... oh, and of course when we finally got it back on it was dark, still slopping around in wetsuits... From then on I at least put a rope on the back, and CABLE on the winch! :) I hate to even think about what could have happened to my first boat...
Craig

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

I have never had anything happen to me. During a snow storm a few years back, a friend of mine had to stop on an on ramp to the highway. It was all ice and a car had spun out and was blocking the ramp. He was checking to make sure the guy was ok, when a truck towing two snowmobiles came down the ramp and lost it. One of the snowmobiles came off the trailer and hit my friend. He was in the hospital for a long time, but at least he was alive and the truck didn't hit him.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Some years ago I was fishing at Lake of the Woods in Canada when a guy pulled into the resort with a wheel missing and the axel dragging on the cement, throwing sparks. He had evidently come some 10 miles or so without the wheel. This was a fairly remote place, but the local mechanic was able to rig an axel that worked and welded it on his trailer. Don't know if he made home, somewhere back east. Poor guy, the standard there was a minnow rig that enabled me and my kids to limit walleye every day. He seemed to know better, and used and lost almost evey lure in his tackle box with almost no results.

Jerry

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Got my first boat last October Having heard horror stories about trailer bearings, I ask the seller "how's the bearings". He said he had just repacked them. So I drive home with the trailer, about 15 miles. Part highway at 60 mph and part city driving. I just pull into my driveway, and the left wheel flops over. Bearings are shredded. I figure what he had done was to slap some grease on the outside bearing, and nothing on the inner bearing. He didn't pull the wheel. Got new bearings for both wheels, and installed bearing buddies. Could have been worse, like losing the wheel going 60.

Jerry

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Way back in the early 70's, bass boats were 15 ft, a big motor was 50 hp, trailer wheels came in two sizes, 8" and 12", and 1/4" ski rope was standard for winch cable. Coming home from fishing around dark, I happened to top a rise and looked in the mirror to see the entire bottom of my 70 Bomber grinning back at me. The ski rope gave up, the wind rocked the boat back on the swivel bunks and if it hadn't been for the strap across the back, a different ending would be obvious. I eased off the gas and she settled right back down where she belonged. Took off my belt, fastened her down, and got her on home. Ever since, I've become a fanatic on safety chains, not to mention grease fittings on hubs, extra bulbs for trailer lights, fuses, spare tires, spare lugnuts, spare bearings, races and hubs. And ya can't never have enough rope or duct tape.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

Scariest for me was last year, 30 miles off NJ tuna fishing we hear a call saying a boat is engulfed in flames. Turns out it was about 2 miles from us and we followed the smoke all the way in. Since it was mid-summer there were plenty of boats to pick the people up but we watched the 35 footer burn to the water line and sink. VERY sobering sight!

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

This happened when I was a teenager and supposed to know everything. A buddy of mine says we can use his dad's 21' day cruiser for the day, if we can get it to the lake. Sure, I've got a truck (Toyota SR? 2wd manual  ) . Well, long story short, we get it to the lake, launched and have a great day. Go to retieve it. Little Toyota won't pull it out of the water...no way no how. Finally got a bunch of guys to help push it up the ramp through all the clutch smoke
I barely get this boat back to his dads when the clutch goes out...totally fried.
So being the geniuses that we were, we borrow his dad's car and hook me up with a chain to get it to my house. Chain wasn't very long, so I had to keep riding the brakes so as not to slam into his dad's car. You guessed it, by the time we got to my house the brakes were now fried as well. That boat trip cost me about $400

I've told this one befor, but hear goes again.

I have an acquantence that is an accident looking for a place to happen,. Kind of a real life Homer Simpson.

Anyway, he's on his way fishing and stops to fill up his two six gallon tanks in the boat. Once full, he got distracted (very easy for him) and forgot to put the cap on one of the tanks.

He proceeds down the road a few miles and he being a smoker, flips the butt out the window.

Guess where it landed? Yep, he was then towing an inferno.

We were behind him and we all stopped together. We almost did not get it unhooked before it torched his truck too. I realize now how dangerous that was, we should have let everything go up.

There was nothing left of the boat/motor/trailer except some hard parts like wheel rims and stainless steel engine shafts.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

This one's mine from two years ago. Still hurts to tell it.

At the end of my vacation I bring the boat back home from the cabin. The next day, last day of my vacation, I get up early to get the boat put to bed down where I keep it, because we're going to barbecue in the afternoon. First thing I do is call my insurance agent, because I had this nagging feeling all vacation that I forgot to renew my boat insurance -- no problem, I did it early in the year. Then I drive off to a self serve car wash to power wash the hull to get the gunk off the bottom. I get to the carwash and there's only one stall that I can back the trailer into because of all the angles and it's tought to line up the trailer with the stall. I finally line up the trailer to back in, and some joker pulls into the stall right in front of me then gets out with a challenging grin. I bite my tongue, don't want to lose that vacation relaxed feeling just yet, but I'm annoyed and I don't quite keep my cool. I throw the car in gear and head out onto the street. Problem is, I'd manouvered in so tight I couldn't make the turn with the trailer and I'm so mad I've forgotten I've got a boat on the back. BOOM. I just staved in my hull at the rubrail on a concrete wall. I get out to look at it, and the guy who stole my parking spot is laughing. It's my fault and I'm still trying to keep my vacation buzz so I take the high road again and slowly pull out and head for home trying to figure out how to fix the boat. Only trouble is, now I'm driving too fast while I think about what this is going to cost me and a few minutes later I'm bouncing down a bad stretch of road and blue smoke starts coming out the back. I''ve bent my trailer axle on the opposite side to where I did the hull in and one tire has caught against the fender and melted down. Now I'm still trying to keep my cool, so I go home, book it into a trailer shop and call a tow truck. They only have one flatbed that can do a boat on a trailer and I've got to go to the boat and wait for it because they have to fit me in between booked jobs and it could be any moment. Just enough time to call my isnurance broker to tell her I just had an accident with the boat after calling her out of the blue to check if its insured this morning. Sure, she says. Three hours at the side of the road later, I'm watching my boat bounce something awful on the trailer on this flatbed en route to the trailer shop where I end up replacing the springs while I'm replacing the axle, hubs and bearings (because the old one's don't fit the new axle). Then I'm buying a new tire. Then I'm over to the fiberglass place to fix the hull. Three weeks and $2,000 later, of which the insurance got some, I got to scrub all the gunk off the hull by hand because I never want to see a car wash again.

Suszuki Dave, I feel for ya. That sounds like a crappy way to end a vacation.

Re: Worst towing story or accident.

I usually go fish with my friend, but I missed out on this adventure.....but at least no one got hurt. My friend has a 14' Jon boat and he uses a little 8' x 4' tilting trailer to hual it around. So him and his daughter drive up to a little lake about 1 1/2 hours from Reno. They get there, fish, and load up to come home. Now this lake is kinda off the beaten path so to get his Suburban and trailer turned around, he ends running over some sage brush. Back on the pavement, he gets it up to about 60 or so, and WHAM!!...he looks in the rearview and all he can see is the bottom of the boat! In the side mirror he can see the boat and trailer really swaying from one side to the other. He slams on the brakes, the boat comes back down, they pull over and get out......hmmm....looks like the pin the keeps the trailer from tilting is gone! Seems that sometime during the turn around, the hitch pin clip got pulled out by some brush....just took a few minutes of vibrating before the pin itself fell out. Got off lucky, put some nice dings in the back of the boat and tweaked the trailer tongue. The guy behind him said the trailer was swaying so hard that the tires were coming off the ground 1 to 2 feet! Had he not gotten it stopped so fast, I imagine the tongue may have failed... He now uses a bolt, castle nut and cotter pin to lock the tilt mechanism......tongue still looks funny tho
