Re: Worth it ?

If the teamwork thing works out well, I think that moves it into "priceless" territory.

It's still going to be expensive to move into that priceless territory, so be prepared. Boats are not now nor will they every be inexpensive. Even the name says is.

Break Out Another Thousand

Trust me, it's true.

Re: Worth it ?

Well, my son and I spent about 6 hours on the boat just using a pressure washer to get things all cleaned up. From the outside, it looks very charming.
Going over the interior, I did not find too much that caused me worry. The next part is to take up the carpeting and inspect for dry rot. Could use some advise on this portion. I am attaching a photo of the just cleaned out engine compartment. You will notice that the forward engine mount is sheared off at
the transom. Question I have at this point is are the engine mount bolts come out FROM the transom or do they bolt INTO the transom. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated. My son had a blast and we got it all sparkling clean.

That is a start anyway. From the OD photos, can anyone tell me what I might have? I know it is a Mercruiser, but possible model # ?? All the tags and ID markings are worn off. I am seeking out information from local engine rebuilders on the GMC 160 HP six. Any ideas what it might typically cost to have the outdrive overhauled? Not exact, but some sort of budget benchmark.

Your best bet would be to post inpection and dry rot parts over in the Restoration forum. This forum is where you take care of your engine and outdrive,

From the OD photos, can anyone tell me what I might have?

You have a Mercruiser One drive, NOT and Alpha I, just a 1 drive.
It came out before the Alpha, one of the many drives typically known as a pre-Alpha.

You still need to go to the adults only sticky and download the manual, in case you still haven't found it, CLICK HERE to go there. Download manual #1 and start reading.

Re: Worth it ?

Thanks for your insight on the model. Are they worth repairing? This one sounds pretty ancient. Also, is it even thinkable to take a car engine and try to "marine-ize" it? Seems there are a number decent running engines from cars readily available, but few comparable marine.

Ayuh,... It's pretty old, but only You can make that decision...
It may run with nothing but a Tune-up, or it could take a full blown rebuild...

That Is in fact an ole Chevy pickup truck motor...Not a car motor...

Re: Worth it ?

Just received this information from a local Portland, Oregon commercial engine rebuilding outfit concerning my Merc powerplant.

Thanks for the photo. It is a 160 HP Chevrolet 250 cubic inch 6 cylinder. Rather common in marine applications. We keep in production this engine in long block form. No manifolds or tinware. All marine gaskets are provided, oil pump new in box. All valve train parts finished & adjusted. The price is $1517.00 plus a $360.00 core deposit. The bare block core is valued @ $125.00 as well as the cylinder head @ $125.00 if core is cracked or rusted beyond rebuilding. We could finish the engine we have in the works in about 8-10 business days. The price includes hard seats for unleaded fuel.

This is the first solid number I have gotten so far. Now I am looking for info
on the OD part of the ball game. I am posting this so others in my situation
might be able to benefit from the "budget number" aspect of this refit.

Take a look at this boat in the portland craigslist

http://portland.craigslist.org/yam/boa/1658447120.html

Its $1000 and in running condition on a trailer
if it is like they say "turn key'' you could give your boat away or sell the parts and be on the water this summer so you can teach your son how to fish instead?

Re: Worth it ?

Drive = MC-1 and should be a 165:1 ratio for that engine. GM L-6 250 cid 160hp. Thats a classic Formula T-bird tri hull too. I'd say good deal and worth time and effort. It's a good setup, and plenty of those engines and drives around, also you may be able to upgrade the drive to an Alpha one fairly easy if your bolt pattern is the same. Not sure which year they were different, something to check into. Don or Bondo may know, just make sure the transom/stringers are solid. ;)
