Wouldn't I just try cleaning it first? Then if that doesn't work get a rebuild kit? I could just drop a whole new engine in it and skip all the detective work.

That is assuming that the engine is causing your problems. It may not be that easy. Your drive definitely needs work, which is easy compared to fixing a waterlogged hull (hopefully it is not).

Just go through the steps and you will figure it out.

Have a great day,

Rob.

After reading and replying to your post about plug wires being crossed,( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=311448 )
I think you really need to get the manual out and start checking things.
If you do have 3 plug wires in the wrong place, the engine does not sound ok, it would be missing big time.
If you can't tell that by listening, then you better find someone that knows what it should sound like to listen to it.

I think I figured out the main problem, someone had #4 and #6 plug wires switched around. I switched em and put the muffs on, started up and the motor is so much smoother now. Would that cause the slow speed at WOT?? But now I have a gas leak , right where the gas goes into the carb there's a small nut then a big one...its leaking around where the big nut meet the carburator, how do I fix that just take it off and put some loctite on the threads??

The leak at the carb might be a cracked fitting or housing.

Fixing the plug wires will probably fix the WOT RPM problem.

If you don't have a tach you're not going to know for sure.... I also saw that you indicated that you have a gas-in-the-oil smell...

You may have a defective fuel pump causing that.

It appears there's a LOT of preventive maintenance that was not, or is not being done here....

I suggest you and your pax wear life jackets and carry a good fire extinguisher.........be ready to jump...
