Re: WOT on 4.3 merc

If you've had the motors tuned and they didn't put them - properly - into base timing mode, you'll see a noticeable drop in performance due to retarded ignition timing. Couple that with falling out of the peak HP band for that motor and...slow.

Obviously, the data doesn't add up.

I will say, with modern progressive pitched props we've run into some darn low slip #'s for the "Quoted" pitch.

Those Fas-Trac hulls are great and efficient, but more difficult to set up. The smaller ones put so much air under the boat, many "Good" props ventilate when any kind of trim is applied.

Diameter and blade area changes can significantly affect RPM's. The rule of thumb is 1" decrease in diameter will increase RPM's by 400 as well as the more commonly quoted 150/200rpm change per inch of prop pitch. Your mileage may vary.

You mentioned a 14" diameter prop. It is not uncommon to see a 400rpm difference between same pitch Lazer II(~14"dia.-higher rpm) and your Mirage(~15"dia.lower rpm) with same Mercury quoted pitch.

Since this is a new to you boat, did you sea trial the vessel?

Re: WOT on 4.3 merc

Old thread so quick review:
Currently: twin 4.3, 190hp, alpha one, 1.81 gear ratio, 15.25x19p, 4200 WOT @ 39mph, Regal 2760 year 2000, dry weight 7800lbs.

14.25x17p Stiletto's
or
15.25x15p Powertech (my thinking here is to keep the diameter high for the weight of the boat)

Regal specs:
Engine hp Approx. mph @ 3000 rpm Approx. top speed
7.4L MPI B3 (v8) 310 21 41
TWIN 4.3L ALPHA 380 25 46 <------------- ME
TWIN 4.3L BRAVO3 380 27 45
TWIN 4.3L EFI ALPHA 420 27 51
TWIN 4.3L EFI BRAVO3 420 28 51

4200 WOT @ 39mph
Do you realize that is the first time you have reported 4200? This little change tells me that all the other data is now possibly (if not probably) right. At 4000 RPM we were seeing 2% slip. This is now showing 7% slip with the extra 200 RPM, and no other changes . . . Changes my whole attitude . . . :)

1) Those props are flipping perfect with the exception of pitch.
2) Go the EXACT SAME brand and model and go to 17s or 15s. Since you are not complaining about hole shot I think I'd want the 17s.
3) Recognize that much over 40 MPH is not in the cards despite the Regal data (always overstated as it is performed with empty boats under perfect conditions)
4) Hurry, and report back!!

Re: WOT on 4.3 merc

I think new gas, sea foam, new fuel filters, waxing the bottom, etc. got me the extra 200!!! Which would provide better hole shot? top speed? Thanks again for your help

But same top speed? 39 right? It is the combination of ALL pieces that has lead me to caution. You've added 200 RPM to the equation, but nothing else changed?

Re: WOT on 4.3 merc

With GPS speedo I have seen 40.4 with the current.
How much current?

I bet they don't make a 16. Usually odd numbered pitch only, especially with 3 blades.

Purchased Powertech OFS3 15.25 x 17P. WOT is 4800 rpm with a top speed of 40 mph. Planes MUCH, MUCH quicker. Boat really handles differently. It feels about 10 feet shorter and 4000lbs lighter. Top speed didn't really improve much but the difference in acceleration is drastic.

Re: WOT on 4.3 merc

Awesome!! Maybe twins play a role in the 6% that I don't understand, but this seems like a decent result despite the 40 MPH. Seems right to me now. Congratulations :)

If you ever get the itch again a 4 blade solas in a ss would make you grin..Good thread and lots of info..Twins can change the way you look at slip...45 auto with high fives.. large boat.. fast hull gets 0%. Multi blades offer increased blade area and ss will deform less than alum large boats are intresting.

What do you mean 45 auto with high fives? How do you think a 4 blade would affect speed, planing, WOT?
