Re: WOT RPMs 77 Evinrude 85 hp (revisited)

OK, now I understand.>>>I thought, by your earlier post, that at one time it could turn 4500RPM with a full load (5 bodys on board), but now could only turn 4500RPM with a LIGHT load (2 people).
My mistake.>>>then, I guess its not missing RPM's that it had before. I have a similar setup (18ft ModifiedVee with 1978 115hp)and performance changes alot from 2 people to 5 people. WOT About 5400rpm with a 13.25 x 17prop & 2 people.

Still seems weird to me that it turns the same RPM at WOT with such a differance in load, for that sized engine/boat combo>>>I better leave this to the more knowledgable here.
Except maybe try pulling the plug wires off & on (plastic fuse puller pliers)one at a time quickly, with the engine running, to see that its firing on all slugs???
GOOD LUCK

How do the spark plugs look??? Are they all the same???Do they have a brown coloring with a bit of oily residue???or are they a black oily/carbon mess?? Maybe yours are whiteish and dry>>>Not a good sign by the way.
Hello,
What if my plugs are whiteish and dry?? Is it running lean??
thank you

Yes, whiteish and dry tells you you are on the lean side. It needs more fuel. Have you tried to squeeze primer bulb when running wot ?

G Dane,
Yes, in the test tub I've tried and it stays soft instead of staying hard, I have to keep pumping the bulb.
thanks
Mike and son Zach

Then I would start by replacing the primer bulb, clean the pickup-screen in tank and tighten or replace all fuel fitting clamps. Also check the tankvent. If you keep priming and the primerbulb is working it will flood out. It is in lack of fuel at wot.

G Dane,
One more observation, when I filled the gas tank, ther was air bubbling out one of the screws on top of the tank. It holds the gas gage in place. Is this not a good thing??

Mike and Son Zach

MYHUGEBOAT>> replace the gasket for your fuel gauge sender>>>even a small gasoline leak can be explosive!

**JMCGILL**>>> how are you making out>>>any luck with the RPMs???
I would say the best bet would be to get an engine manual & perform a "LINK & SINC">>this will set your throttle & ignition advance linkages!
Let us know how your doing.

myhugeboat

Of coarse there shouldnt be any leak, but I dont see it can affect motor in any way, as long as it can pump gas. If you have another tank and fuel line with bulb, I would try that. Or borrow someone elses portable tank.

I haven't done anything with the boat....I was busy last weekend, but I may take it out this weekend just to test it out.

I'll have to find a manual to do the "link and synch", but I really don't have the cash to throw around for a special order like that.

Will my Seloc work?

I just did link & synch on a 40 hp. Not sure I could have figured it out w/out manual.
My carbs were only opening about one third of the way. Similar rpm at WOT as yours, now they are at 5400+. Increase in power & holeshot is significant.
Best 35 or 40 bucks you can spend for your outboard. I have OMC manual.

I wish I had the OMC manual>>>it maybe my next purchase.
I have the CLYMER shop manual>>covers Evinrude/Johnson 48-235HP 1973-1990. It gives a detailed instructions on the link & sync.
GOOD LUCK

I'll see what my Seloc covers. I'll look into getting a cheap Clymer manual.

Hopefully I can get something done before the weekend so I can get it on the water one last time.
