I have a 1872 Landau aluminum Jon boat. Im going to use it for hunting and fishing. Would a 18hp Mercury work? I found a real good deal on one, but wanted so see if anyone else has used this size. The tag say 40hp max on it. Thanks in advance.

18 will work but a 25 would be better. You might not plane out but you will get there fine.

I used to have a McCullough 9.9 that I ran on rented boats. One day I rented a 20' "barge". Since the bottom was flat and had a lot of surface area, it planed out really nice. So, 18-25 whatever should do nicely.

It'll push it fine, but if your huntin'/fishin' spots are 15+ miles down the river you may need more HP or by the time you get there it'll be time to come back!;) 40HP max seems kinda low for an 1872?

It's probably a tiller steer....

Speaking of tiller steer. The History Channel runs a show about a bunch of Louisiana bayou Cajuns that catch alligators for a living. They are running at least one 115 Merc with tiller steering and several with slightly lower hp. So, if setup right and all, must be a walk in the park.

Its a 1976 Landau 1872 I ended up with a 35 hp evinrude tiller steer. Going to mount it on the boat this weekend.
