would a 5 hp be good as a kicker for tropy 1703?

Hi
Almost decided buying a trophy 1703 (17 feet, weight+outboard about 1000 kg), outboard mercury 100 hp efi, 4 stroke.
I have at home a new 5 hp 4 cycle parsun outboard that I am considering using as an auxiliary.

regardless of the not so good reputation of parsun, would a 5 hp be strong enough to move the boat for trolling in low speeds or as an emergency backup motor?
The boat is intended to be used offshore in the Mediterranean sea and not in calm lake!

would appreciate your help here...

Since it should be mounted on an auxiliary bracket...... give it a try.......it will be S L O W but it will move. It will go and for "trolling" use it might be too slow.

I think a 9.9 would be a better choice both for the power and the availability of props more suited to a kicker application.
I think the 5 will struggle in an off shore application.

I agree but since he has the "import" on hand .....he could try it. Yes it will be a struggle.

maybe I will manage to replace it with 2 cycle 9 h.p. outboard as mine is totally new-not used at all.

You could maximize prop rpm to push your boat at near max wot rpm to be inside safety working parameters factory stated for that engine. Standard factory delievedd props perforrms well on light applications. On hard winds, strrong currents probably will be lugging engine in the rare event you must go full wot to get the hell out of there the fastest as possible.

A 9.8 or 9.9 would be much better, but you already are counting with a 5. If wanting to stay with it, check if Parsun offers different prop pitch alternatives, must check with an induction tach your current wot rpm and play with prop p?tch if need rpm maximization for your combo.

If a 3.5 HP pushes a 1.5 ton J24 at crusing speeds at around 4 knots on flat no wind water cond, why can't a correct pitched 5 HP push your boat near same. Don't expect getting on plane, will achieve just low displacement speeds.

My boat is a bit smaller at 15' and is a tri-hull. I have a 5hp '89 Mariner and it works great, 6.5 mph at full throttle and 0.7 mph at idle. this is all with very mild conditions but has got me back to the docks in a heavy wind storm before I got my main(Merc Classic 50) up and running good.
I already had this motor before buying and restoring my boat so for me t was a "no brainer". now I want to be able to slow it down a bit more for when I'm trolling wit the wind.

just my experience, it's all going to depend on where you boat, big or small lakes, ocean etc..

Had a 9.9 hp on a bracket on a 115 hp powered 20 footer. Great for trolling or even for coasting on lake. Since used on a fresh water lake WOT speed did not matter much as long as the possibility to get back to the marina was there. I would have used a 5 hp if I has already owned it. On the ocean or long distance on intracoastal waterways would be a different story. 20 hp minimum + good radio to call for help. Hope this helps. Cheers

PS: IMHO a finer prop pitch on the Parsum could give the kicker a break.
