It's a 77 Johnson 115hp, and while either underway or sitting in the yard the motor will gradually fall as low as it can go. I raised up about 3" from the stop/resting bar and after about 2 minutes it was resting back down again. I'm planning to check the fluid and top off if needed this week, but wasn't sure if that could be the problem or if i'll need to have more work done to it.

Well, I think you're first step is to top off the fluid and then go from there. After you add fluid you'll want to run the engine up and down a couple of times and then top it off again. Then repeat until it won't take any more. After that see if you've still got a problem.

Check the emergency release valve and make sure it isn't loose.

emergency release valve is the manual release screw? Good call, i didn't even think to check that. I sure hope i don't have to take it in for oring repairs, it's nearly impossible to find a reliable boat mechanic/shop around this area.

Found the problem, there was a leak at the metal hose on the bottom of the reservoir. I thought it was loose, so when i tried to tighten it the whole thing popped out (busted threads on the inside). Am i stuck having to replace the entire reservoir now? I'm not sure where to even purchase one if that's the case. I'm not sure if this is some kind of return hose or if it's actually under pressure 24/7, but is there any type of sealant/adhesive that will hold this back together? I don't think it'd be under alot of pressure since it seemed to strip so easily.

It does look like theres still thread left on the inside in the pics, but trust me, there's not. It will slide right in/out pretty easily...
