I'm considering running 100-1 in my gas tank as a precaution with my 1994 inj. Merc 40..<br />I dont often cruise @ WOT so the 100-1 premix in the tank should protect the motor if oil injection fails..<br />Does it damage the engine, or not good for it to run extra oil, also would the 100-1 suffice or should I go 50- 1 double oil ??<br />thanks for any help on this..<br />Alan :)

Scali, I don't know the merc injection system, but if you are not comfy with the oiling system why not bypass it and mix 50:1. Assuming it's possible. Chief ;)

Scali- <br />Depending on the oil ratio you choose- Short term you will see the obvious- more smoke, fouled plugs, and potentially poor idle (plug fouling). Long term, you will see excessive carbon build up and the potential to stick a ring due to that carbon build up. Decarbing with SeaFoam will be a regular project. <br /><br />It is possible that you could see less carbon build up by using a synthetic, but its still going to be an issue. <br /><br />I agree with Chief 101, Since you are planning on doing some premix anyway, if you are that worried about it, why not just bypass the oil injection and just use the premix as your primary lubrication?<br /><br />If you aren't WOT very often and just cruising, you probably are not using that much fuel to make premixing that big of deal for you...<br /><br />Good luck!

I like the synthetic idea, never thought of that..<br />I kinda like the oil inj. but when they get to be 11 years old it's not easy to trust them.<br />I did change the oil lines this year & have been running double oil first tank full to make sure it's working.<br />One thing I noticed or didnt notice I should say is theres not much more smoke noticable, only @ start up when cold maybe.<br />I'm wondering if it's even a good thing to run say 100-1 in the tank on top with the oil inj.<br />I remember speaking to a fellow who swears it's better for the engine to run double oil all the time & has done it for years.<br />My pump is working, I burned about 6 gallons so far & the oil level has dropped an inch or so in the tank..<br />I think I might pull the gear out for inspection then I'll have more faith, from my research on my motor it's an easy job & the rap on Mercs is the plastic gear strips out sometimes but I think it's mostly the bigger engines with a different type of oil inj setup..<br />thanks ..<br />If anyone else has any opinions on this, i'm all ears :)

Outboards can last a LONG time. In my garage there are 3 old Evindure/Johnsons vintage 69-73 there were rental units for at least part of their lives and running the cheapest oil possible during that time. Everything is showing age exept the cylinders and bearings the oil protects. By the "has worked for me" logic the cheap oil is best, but with the cheap oil they did foul a lot and I have found in my case the Penzoil Synthetic to reduce that signifigantly when mixed at the proper ratio. In the case of boat motors(of any sort) I would trust the manufacturer. It is not like cars where you have government agancies medalling and manufacturers specing thin oils to get .02mpg better milage even if they spec something else off these shores because it will protect better.

Bro the question was " extra oil " not " cheap oil " ..<br />But, thanks for the reply, thats is a good topic as well, I run Merc oil but I'm not sold that the expensive stuff is necesserily better :)

Re: Would running exrta TCW 3 oil damage engine ?

Sorry my post was not meant to push expensive oil over cheap. More along the lines that I believe the factory 50:1 will serve it well since my really old motors have done well with it even though it was cheap oil under abusive service. I think the synthetic is helping plug life more than motor life in my case. I also do not think factory is always best but it is absolutely adequate and barring some other failure I don't think lubricant failure is going to be an issue at factory specs. Injector pump failure or the like I would refer to as lubrication failure rather than lubricant. Seems like you are doing all you can to maintain the injector and make sure it functions so you are further ahead than most right there. Remember that on forums like this you will hear more of the failure stories than the "worked perfect for 20 years" stories that is just human nature, good news gets little press, but 1% failure rate of a part will be drummed up as the whole line being garbage.

I was told that recently by a Merc Tech.<br />" you always hear the few stories of oil injection failure but seldom from the people who've never had a problem .. or sumptin like that but I agree, hence me not removing mine thus far..<br />After I check that plastic gear out, I'll go inj. only oil wise..

Scali, I heard tell of a better gear for that inj. unit. You might call a Merc dealer and update you system as far as it will go. Chief ;)
