Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

Neither are sold yet, just got off the phone with teh blue one, and he said he will gurantee the boat (since he doens't have a barrel full of water) but he said if i put it in writing, he will sign it... Then i would have my local marina check it all out... **** for 700, even if i have to put 300 into it (Add 2 more seats) Looks like it would be fast/usefull in many ways.

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

I own a 1967 Starcraft that looks just like the first boat you are looking at. It has a 50hp evinrude (1973), very close to what you have. It will do 26 mph on still water, and can tow a tube, with a 14 yr old on it.

I agree, the boat will be probably cheaper to fix than the motor, so focus on the motor to make sure it is running correctly. The money is in the motor!!!

The second boat looks cleaner, but "the money is in the motor"....

Just my humble opinion....

oregon........the glass boat has a few "beware" things

overall it looks great........but he said he did the floor........

a lot of guys put a new floor over an old rotten one.......that is how you rot a boat in a few years.

i would ask him ....."how exactly did you do the floor"....if hes vauge about it ....hes lying

a guy that does a floor...is proud of it and he will tell you everything.

what you are tring to get him to tell you is that he ripped the old deck out and replaced it by fiberglassing in a new one.

now.......you also want him to tell you the transom and stringers are in good shape.......if he did the deck.....he will know how they are.

spend an hour or so going thru the compleated projects forum......read jason j's skanky beast........it will show you some things to look for.......

if you are not sure....post here

cheers

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

I got the BOAT ! ! ! LOL 2nd Boat in 1 week... the boat looked great, i checked all over for soft spots, and it looks really well done on the inside, his "Buddy" that has lots of boats, did the majority of the work on the inside, and it looks far better then anything i would have done...

The MOTOR I never got to run, as he had 2 other guys that showed up after me, but i threw down the money first, only because i had writen up a pre agreement, that i'm taking it to the local marina 1st thing in the morning, and if the motor has any issues, i can get a full refund, he agree'd and singed... so lets hope everything checks out...

He is only the 2nd owner of the boat, the 1st had it from 1969 till just last year when he got it... He said he was moving, and even when i was looking at, dealing with his new place hes got rented in a few months.

The motor looked clean inside and out, didn't see any discoloration or anything that would set off an alarm, plugs were brand new, wiring looked fine all the way around... Transom felt solid as a rock, but just to make sure, tomorrow i'm gonna have the full thing inspected...

I did noticed on the bottom of the hull, some fiber glass has been rubbed off from grounding the boat on beach and stuff like that... but i saw no rot/holes what so ever, looked 100x better then the last one i got... Here are some shots i took 2night, lots more 2 come tomorrow

some marine tex, will cover that beach rash right up. if you plan on beaching it, in the future, after the marine tex, put a keel safer on it.

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

I don't know what marine tex is, but i'm sure i'll soon find out. Would i need to go about the same process as i previously might have (Sand, resin, fiber, resin, paint) To the scrape on the front ? I probably will beach a time or too, so i wanna make sure over winter i get it ready for anything i throw at it during the summer....

The Boats getting a leak-down and full inspection right now... at a quick notice, they noticed the transom was decent, but had alittle move too it... And they are doing a much more indeep check about as we speak, i'll let yall know how it goes... if it doesnt check out, i'll probably just dump it for 1k... the guy had 3 other guys on the way to look at the boat, inside the first 4 hours of the add.

oh, and another thing he noticed is the boats max HP motor was 35, and its got a 50 on it... The boats been like this for 15 years, but should i be concerned now?

Boat motor Ran "Excellent"

Transome is "what you will have for a 69, looked just fine"

Problem is the Bullet has a small crack on it, from where it hit a rock... and it has caused water in the gears... Not knowing how long it has been like this, and condition of the gears, they recommend i find a new on... If i can find a used one for a fair price, the boat would be worth keeping, if not, ima return it... anyone know where i can find a 1968 murc 50 lower end for few hundred?

Rest of the boat checked out just fine, floor looks great, no other area's of concern.

Here is the bullet damage... the "seller" Keeps saying just epoxy it, and regrease it, and drive it for ever... the shop is saying repalce the whole unit and pump... I found some on ebay for 200-400, that look good... Hard to say how long this one would last... anyway i can find out, mabey take it out on the water and test it ? Or anything i can check w/out tearing it all down.

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

I found some lower units that i could use to replace it... but most are upwards of 300 bucks... add that to the cost of the boat, and i think i can find a boat with a much newer motor for the same funds, so unless i hear back from one of the other marina's, this boat is probably going back.

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

i TOOK THE BOAT BACK, tho the boat was in great shape, that motor lower unit was toast... and when i dropped it off, he was like "oh yeah, forgot to point that out" Then he left real fast, and i had to sit around for 2 hours untill he came back with the cash... good thing tho, he over paid me lol, he gave me back 740, cause he can't count !!! I would have loved the boat for 500, i had found replacement parts for 350.00 shipped, but then gotta put it in, and before i could even do that, i would have had to take that boats lower end off, to see what kind of spline it was...

The hunt continues !!!

If anyone find me a good boat in portland oregon, and i check it out, and its legit, 50.00 finder's fee =)

Thanks again for everyone's help

RUN, like the wind, AWAY from it. OMC drive system. never put your $ into one. that is a complete money pit. probably not winterized and crack block.

AGREED!

The other with the 25 Evin. is much more serviceable. Underpowered-true but will get you on the water-reliably. The engine alone is worth a minimum of $500.00

Re: Would this be a good 1st boat?

Also, my car thats towing my boat is a 90 325i BMW LOL, so no 19 ft's for me... I had no problem towing the last 2 i got (that 12 fiber, and 14ft glasspar) I even took them to really steep hills, and stoped completly ! All hail the german 6 cyl !

That 25 evin is already down to 800 via emails if i wanted it... He sent me more pictures today.

Good news, dumped that 12ft dry rot boat and calkins trailer for 415.00, so i only paid (60 for new tires, 15 for new lights and the gun was worth about 80 bucks - he sent me 50 back cause he felt bad) For my great 7.5 evin (kicker motor if i can find a good sized motor'd boat)

Boat / Trailer / Motor have gotta be under 600-850 LBS

a it is a little rough, but not really for the age. is under powered, but that could be changed in the future. it should get you on the water.

Went and looked at this Gangstur 12 ft boat tonight... came with an older evinrude... the owner was a car mechanic, and said motor runs great, he was at work, but only wants a mini dirt bike for it (only cost me 170 bucks) Check it out.
