I was thinking of looking at a boat but I'm concerned it may be under powered. It's a 1996 Maxum 2300SC, 5.7 liter(350) with alpha one. It's too cold so I can't test run it. I'm not looking for alot of top end speed 35-40 mph range would be good enough. To give an idea of what I'm used to, I currently own a 1984 18' wellcraft 140 hp and it has plenty of power for us. Thanks Jeff

If everything is right, your speed needs and this combo match up well. This is based on a 250 bhp Carb'ed Alpha. I have experience with a '97 2300 SR and it ran low 40s when it was new.

Not underpowered. Not overpowered, by any means. But it should meet your goals. Of course you would want to sea trial it, to make certain. Take along your typical load on test day. But it should outperform your current boat, unless there is something wrong with the motor.

QC was the 97 fuel injected? Did you own it? Any idea on it's weight?

TilliemWE, sea trail won't be possible were in Ohio that's why I needed opions. I would have to be very impressed with it before I'd buy in the dead of winter. I'd hope for a better deal too.

BTMCB, I heard they had a good hull for semi- rough water.

Thanks for responses.

Since you live in Cincinnati, I'll use small words! :) (I attended UC for 1 year in 1990-1991)

QC was making his statements based on a 250hp 5.7 Carbureted engine. That was/is the base 5.7. A 250hp 2 barrel carb. In 1996 there were a couple other 5.7s you could get with FI. Do you know what the boat you are interested in has?

And I know you can't do a sea trial now, but if you don't do a sea trial before you buy the boat, you are CRAZY. Make any purchase contingent on a satisfactory sea trial. You won't be sorry.

5.7s are great motors, but there can always be problems with a 13 year old engine. Do you know how many hours it has on it? That doesn't always mean anything, though.
The biggest thing, is was it maintained properly?
Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the replies; We've had snow here for the last week so I haven't gotten out to look at it yet.

TilliamWe; just one year! didn't like the area? : ) I spent a lot of time working out of the firehouse in Corryville around that year. The saying about that area (short Vine st.) was "every day is halloween in Corryville".

That is more than enough power for what you are looking for. I have a 350 in my 23' Wellcraft and it gets close to 50 at WOT. Be prepared to burn some gas though. Also a test drive is important but so is price. Around here you can buy boats now for $4000 that sell for $12,000 in July. If the price is right give it a very good look over and if happy buy it. Just be prepared for some possible issues and save accordingly.

Amen to that, my man! :)

+1

I made the deal on my boat in December of 2008. I put down a deposit and the rest was continbgent on a survey and sea trial. With the lousy weather last Spring I didn't "close" on the boat until late May, but I wouldn't have done it any other way.
