Would you buy a '76 Lund in fiberglass?

Hi all,

I'm looking at a truly mint 1976 15.5 Lund in fiberglass with no motor. It barely has a scratch on it, full canopy, windshield wipers, guard rail on closed bow, stored inside and not used for years. Even the Lund seats are mint. Seller wants $2000 for boat and trailer, and I would add a newish 50hp 4 stroke to it.

Is this boat just too old to bother with? It's hard to find decent fiberglass boats around here for that price without gashes, blisters, etc etc.

You didn't tell us where you do your boating. I wouldn't have a problem with the age or the price if it was a 20-23'er but not for a 15 with no engine. Figgure how much you would have in it when you add engine, controls and rigging. then look for what you can get for comparible money.

I'm in Vancouver, BC, so I'll be boating in larger lakes, rivers, and protected ocean inlets.

I can get a 2006 50hp Merc 4 stroke with 100 hours from the local dealer for $2800. Add another $400 for controls. So that brings me to $5000+. Problem is for that money I can only get mid-80's glass boats with mid-80's outboards at 15-16ft.

My thinking was an older glass boat and a much newer outboard. I'd hate to repower a $5000 used boat. Maybe my logic is flawed though.

An old fiberglass boat with no motor has essentially no value. Even if it's in great shape. So no, I would not spend $2000 on one. Maybe $500 is it truly is mint and the trailer is very nice.
