Would you buy a boat that said "new floors" in the ad?

I don't think I would - Just tells me that there is a high probability that the stringer and transom are rotten and they just covered it up with the "new floors"

What are your thoughts. I see this a lot on craigslist.

Maybe they're a straight shooter and did it right. Replacing all 3.

I know from my 1st experience buying a boat on Craigslist, I'll be a whole lot more thorough if I do it again.

Who knows, maybe the floor was all that needed replaced. I try to see good in everyone till they give me a reason not to!

If I replaced the floors in my boat I would take pics, so I would ask to see them if no pics no deal

Ya, even if the guy is very honest he may not be aware of everything, the guy I bought my boat from barely knew how to start it (big pot head) they were very very honest and nice, but my dad has been a mechanic for YEARS so I brought him thank god

It raises a flag but I'd be looking for rot in those areas anyway. What I would do if faced with that ad would be to start asking open-ended questions. Not "did you do the stingers too?" but rather, "Tell me about your new floors - how did you know what needed to be replaced? How did you do the work? Is there a right way and a wrong way to do this work?", etc., etc.

I'd be wanting to hear about how they tested or inspected the stringers as well as get them talking about the glass work to see if they sounded like they knew what they were talking about. Of course pics would help too. If they had the work done by someone else I'd be looking for the documentation that outlined exactly what gone done. Often you can get a good sense of the condition of the boat or potential trouble areas by just letting the owner talk themselves into (or out of) a corner. Just pay out as much line as they want and listen close.

Impatico also has a very good point. Sometimes the original owner doesn't know about their own boat to be much help. If there's a significant amount of money on the line a professional survey is always money well spent.

Ask questions and get pics if possible. I emailed a "new floor" boat and asked about the stringers and transom, guy told me the stringers were fine (boat was 1972), so he left them. Then he told me the transom is all fiberglass, so no worries.

I passed.

If he knows so much about boats that he calls the deck or sole a floor I would insist on a survey.

I trust all the eBay and CL ads. Why would a seller be less than honest, they just want to dump their junk at premium prices. I ask questions, jump up and down, look all over, ask more questions and drive away if I'm not satisfied. I would never buy a boat if I can't do all those things. As far as water testing, it depends how much $ is involved If its ad says water ready, it better be. If excuses are made about "I winterized it and can't put on the water" or something like that the seller doesn't want my money. And I don't want his boat.

I have found that most sellers do not know that it is called a deck. I remember when I got my Glastron and started posting here. I got corrected QUICK, and I soon learned the lingo. the funny thing is I have been around boats all my life, and did not know the right term for the "sole"

Hell, when I find a boat on craigslist, I automatically assume its going to need a new deck anyway! I don't go to craigslist to find a good boat.

Smoke, it was a cool old boat, but I couldn't see dumping money into a new project until I'm done with the battle wagon. I'm working hard on her now. Not everyone can do a refurb as cheap as you,lol

I got lucky on a 80 Omega just the top end of the motor and seat wood had to be repaired

Someone stole the top end of the motor from the Previous Owner.

The rain water in the motor raised the oil level some in the 10qt pan and the slight oil leak from the drain plug drained it out over time resulting in a messy bilge.
The carpet was useable after hours at the local car wash and after some new wood under the seats the upholstery made it a few more seasons till I sold the boat.

All kidding aside, In this day and age were even grandparents have digital cameras, If the seller doesn't have a few good pictures and can't give a pretty good verbal description of the work done and materials used i would probably pass.

Huh?

What people call a floor is a sole. That is the correct term.

A deck is topsides as in the front deck on a cabin cruiser not inside the boat.

Best line I have heard from a craigslist seller.

Boat has been forsale three years sitting in front of the guys house.
Asking $4000 my first offer is $3000 the guy just says thanks and walks away.
Two hours later call me and says $3800 is as low as he will go. Im still mad at how he acted before so it fun time. I respond with when do you want to take it for a test run oh well if you want to see it on the water I haft to have $4000.

Funny the boat has been listed as low as $3500 on craigs list.
