Hello All,

The majority of the folks that I have talked to or read about suggest that to purchase a used charter sailboat would be foolish. (litterally about 6 sources)

I am completely ignorant about the matter and am in the middle of doing a bunch of research for a used sailboat.

Thank you in advance,

Mike

I dont see why a charter boat would be a bad investment it has more than likely been well taken care of and if it was licensed for over 6 passengers you can be assured its up to uscg federal maritime standards this is a vigorius inspection that has to be done at least annually and haul bi annually and performed by the uscg and is documented and they look/test everything wires fuel tank is pressurised even stability and a lot more.

I've heard people say this before as well as saying not to buy boats over 20 years old. I personally believe it's just a simple generalization which is easier than looking at your purchase on a boat to boat basis.

For example, what kind of charter boat was it? Where and how long was it operated? What kind of clients were using it? Was it for learning how to sail? Do they have maintenance records and log sheets? The list goes on.

If it was a cheap vessel in low cost bareboat charter for people learning to sail near reefs then yes, I would generally recommend staying away from it.

As Xtraham stated, many charter operations maintain a very high standard for their vessels whether to meet local regulations or to provide a better vessel than competitors but there are those that don't maintain them.

So, look carefully as you would with any used boat and do your homework and you'll be ok.

Hello All
It all depends to how much you want to spend. If you have enough to buy what you want and it is new, FINE!
Otherwise you must see your options. A used boat will give you some problems, but a new one as well. Learn about boats and you can see what you buy.

Depends on the charter company, some rotate boats out after very few years of service and they're impeccably maintained. Other operations don't keep the same standards. What you're being warned about with prior charter vessels is the fact that they're actually sailed and lived on a lot more than your average private party boat.
