I bought a '78, 7.5hp a couple winters ago for $250.....
Turned out to be a good runnin' motor with only a few problems...

7.5 merc should not be too hard to get started even if it sat for a while. look at some of the threads on winterizing boats, they talk about how to store boats for long periods and how to get them started after sitting for a long time. some thing like pull the spark plug and shoot in a small amount of mix fuel.....some thing like that. a few hours of work on it if you are thinking about buying it would be well spent. if you can het it to turn over and run for a few seconds buy it if after a few hours and using some tricks to get it started from some of these threads it wont turn over i would walk away!

If my memory is correct I don't think that mercury made a 7.5 in 1988, I think they just made 9.8s.

Re: Would you buy this

I bought a nice little 1978 merc 9.8hp 110 (mostly the same thing) this year for $40 as not running.

It cost me another $70-$80 in parts due to a melted water pump housing, needing a gasket on the power head (head cover), and a fuel pump/carb kit.

Nice little engine, very quiet, easy starting, and smooth running. :)

Prev owner clearly overheated the engine, but it still runs like a champ :D
