It is a store that you wouldn't have to go into. No more dealing with long check out line, rude, crazy peoples, etc..all the stuffs that annoyed you at the grocery store. You can place your order online, pay for it, print out a receipt, drive up to the pick up window, show the receipt and have a box/es contain everything you've ordered load into your vehicle and be on your way. You can shop anytime, anywhere with an internet connection, set your pick up date (any day) and time (8am-10pm). Pricing would be competitive of course.

Voted yes, but would also miss the smells, sights, and impulse buying of not being there in person. Hard to pick out the fruit and veggies you want ... and I am fussy about that ...

So in reality, I would give it a try, and maybe do it sometime, but would not use it regularly.

Probably would use it for instead of Costco for the bulk items, but not for things I like to look at like produce and meat.

So not sure how to vote.

No way, there is WAY too much variability in food quality to buy sight unseen.

If the place employed knowledgeable people and had fresh produce, would this still be a problem? Even if some highschool kid was trained to pick out the freshest apples with the least amount of blemishes for full price, I would at least trust the place once. Have an option for 'less then perfect' at a marginal discount (good option if you're only making say banana bread. they don't need to be fresh or perfect). If I expected and paid for quality produce, and constantly received less than that, my business would be lost in that department.

I think it's a viable service and having an option for delivery would be key.

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

This could be a real plus for the consumer by saving money on impulse items...... and a downside for the store by not allowing the consumer to browse.

It's a fact that people who shop by a list save more money then the people who shop every few days w/o one.

When I was a youngen.... there were food services that would distribute shopping lists to housewives and do almost the same thing ... but deliver. There were pre-printed menus and food plans for a family of 2,3,4,5 etc. It was based on entire meals (soup to nuts). Similar to amway, stanley brush...fuller brush but the products were some off brand. BJ's has Berkley and Jensen brands that do a fine job of making the package "look" like another brand

There was a delivery service my friend had in NY where he would deliver groceries with his van from the market. Many people loved to do a big shopping but did not have a car to haul it home.

I wish at times there was a butcher shop with meat/poultry plans still around but those have gone away too :(

Add a money back guarantee and optional home delivery (for a fee of course) and you may have more takers there gf.;);):)

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

Believe it or not, this concept has been around longer then the internet has been around. I lived with my brother and mother in the western part of Philadelphia for awhile in the late 60s. Mom was a school teacher, and my brother and I went to a school that had mandatory sports after classes. While my mother would have been the primary shopper, neither my brother or I could be of help either, because our day didn't end any sooner than hers did.

What Mom did was to order groceries at a local grocery via telephone. The store provided a list of every product that they sold, and updated it as products were added and deleted, or as prices changed. For her, this was a major timesaver, and as I remember, the price wasn't really much different than the walk in price. I think there was a delivery charge, though.

We bought most everything that we needed from the store, including household prodcuts, etc. While I'm sure she might have sent something back once in awhile, I don't have any memories of major problems over anything in particular. That said, she did buy some things elsewhere, typically on the way home from work. Items like milk, bread, or something that was forgotten on the last order, seemed to make it onto the "buy it now" list.

What I do think would be an issue today, versus all those years ago, is the attitude of the average store employee. The store that my mother used was not one of the chain groceries - it was a small, owner operated grocery. These days, such stores are scarce in most places, so you don't get the attention to detail, that a store owner might be likely to require of his/her employees. If you could deal with that issue, however, I think the concept would work well. In fact, given the ease of communication and ability to constantly update information via the internet, it might even work better.

BTW, if this is something that you are thinking about doing, you might do a little homework on grocery stores in large cities. This sort of shopping is something that they have also provided for years. With a few phone calls, you might learn a lot about the positive and negative aspects of internet grocery sales and delivery.

PS: I voted "no" only because I'm not pressed for time these days and I'm a cheapskate at heart!:D

My Mom did something like that. She would call Blue's Grocery with her shopping list and a few hours later they were delivered to our house. Once a month they sent her a bill.

Better than internet; waaaay better, but it involved service. Modern vendors don't know what that is.

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

not sure if i'd pay for it...most stores can't even bag food right much less anything else. maybe that's why stores have us working for them in the self-checkout lanes now?

if i lived in a city i'd be more interested

if you were to do it with out the fruit and the meat....(you could do packages sliced sandwich meat.....like cooked ham or hot dogs. but nothing where a judgment call would be made....(thats a big can of worms.......i.e. this meat has too much fat...or not enough)

if you had a good location for drive thru........and a delevery option!
your costs would be whse ing and stocking.......you would not have the costs of middle mgnt, cashiers, you could prob get away with 4 staff members. a lot less insurance

your costs would be in advertising. you would need a major budget for that. you would be trying to create a trend, possibly a trend that could go across the nation and change the way we shop.

if you could somehow......open across the nation at the same time with a large campaign.......hmmmm but you would need capitol.....lots of it.....hmmmm.....lets see........where would you get the billion dollars you would need to open at the same time and sweep the nation, create a entirely different life style.......hmmmmmm.

if you want to know where to raise that kind of capitol....pm me........you have somthing there

i even see spin offs....lots.....

cheers

I voted no because I like to select my own fresh food goods such as meat and vegetables. I also would miss my conversations with Jon who's the meat department manager, Bill the veggie guy, and all of my favorite cashiers!!! :D:D:D

We have been doing this since 1999.
And it has come a long way.In 1999 we went through the list with prices and we clicked on the buy button.
Now we go to the virtual store where we "walk" through their 3D isles and pick and choose. An hour later it appears on the doorstep.
There is one store that we go to, one day a week.Well it really is the same store that we order from online, but they have a European medieval market section where bread, cookies and cakes are baked and fresh fish and beef is sold by the desired cut.We go there because this store has a "cafe".It is a very large room with tables where people meet and drink and eat the products that are bought in the store.
You must insist on getting a Wegmans in your town.

Heck yes! No more hunting down a parking place, getting a shopping cart rammed into your vehicle, having some kid sneeze or cough on you, and no more waiting for some one trying to write a check!

I'd be there best customer. :D

I like going to the grocery store. I want to SEE what I'm going to put in my mouth before I buy it.

I have to agree with JB though. Back then, you could trust the grocer to give you the best, when you "ordered". It was in their best interest to do so.
