I worked for a place like this in Seattle area in 1999. People used it and loved it but they tryed to grow too fast and something went wrong the ended up selling out to Peapod then went BK. You could get your items deliverd to your kitchen. We would have everything in totes then deliver right to your kitchen. When we got inside we would pull the bags out of the totes and there you have it. People were always glad to see us at their front doors. Company was called home grocer dot com.

I tryed it for myself but didn't like it.

We have a high end grocery store that does this currently. I think the stores like you to walk through the aisles and pickup the impulse items..

We also have a company that you can shop online and they will deliver in green boxes with dry ice. They are too expensive for me. The produce and meats are very expensive

I like going to the grocery store. I want to SEE what I'm going to put in my mouth before I buy it.

dj.....what if the store didnt carry fresh cut meats and produce or fresh baked goods....and some dairy.......? you know what a can of libbys beans is...or a small bottle of garlic powder.

what if the store just had canned goods..ketchup.....pasta...tide....and all of the other things you buy at the store...toothpast and soap......frozen goods...all of the stuff that you need.

you would still need to go to the butcher shop and bakery for the meat bread and produce.......but we are seeing a re surgence of the produce stores coming back.....possibly the local bakery and butcher shop as well.

We have enough people out of work.I will not even use the auto checkout at the store.

there is a sobering point............

Nope, not gonna happen.

We already have Schwan's- froozen food delivered to your door.
some meat company that sells and delivers.
The Milkman- everybody remembers the milkman, and some of our siblings might look like him.

Besides, if my wife isn't shopping for food she will have time to shop for other things, and God knows I dont have the money for her to shop for another purse.

I don't disagree, on the staples, or the concept. But, we don't eat hardly anything out of a can or box. We're kind of into-Fresh.

It's just not for me.

It's just something I like to do, grocery shop that is. Any other kind of shopping (except boat stuff:D) breaks me out in hives.

Nah...I'll pass on this one. Like DJ and some others, I just like to be able to look at and feel and smell.......well, you get the idea! Also, I do a lot of our shopping, since I'm retired, and I never have been much of a coupon clipper. We have Publix as our grocery stores and almost every time I find the buy 1 get 1 free stuff. Also, by now I know when some items are getting a little high and it's time for a trip to Sam's club to bulk up a little. I guess I don't have a problem with the whole shopping experience, except maybe dodging them wayward carts in the parking lot!! Kinda like autocrossing, so maybe not that bad after all..:D

Safeway does this but goes one better - they deliver.
I voted no because I do not trust someone else to pick out the freshest items - bread, milk, dairy, veggies, fruits, meats, etc.
Sometimes I need to see products to make my mind up too. If I'm having pasta and want some different bread but don't exactly know what I want. I don't want to have to take 1/2 hour wading through pages of breads to find that artisan basil tomato loaf fresh out of the bakery.
Also, I have seen expired items on shelves, moldy cheese, rotten fruit and limp veggies, onions sprouting stalks, potatoes with more eyes than a spider and wrinkles than an ancient mariner. Do you think some kid filling a box is going to care?
Maybe some day.

Well, this is going to be aiming mostly for the younger demographic, no offend to the older folks. The targeted segment would be the busy working parents, single mom/dad, physically handicap and anyone else who would rather be doing something instead of grocery shopping. Keep your opinions and related experiences coming guys. I appreciate it.

In fact the first "supermarkets" were exactly like this...
You actually handed your list to a person behind a counter, kind of like a casino cage (really!) and they filled your order and handed you the bags.

Later, orders were phoned in and picked up or delivered...

Piggly Wiggly was this way back in the day...But was the first to introduce the "self service" idea that we all do now..

If I opened a store, I'd call in the ANTI-MART...cant stand that WM place..for every WallyWorld that opens, 10 local business close..Off subject sorry bout that..had to throw it on here..

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

I remember about 5 years ago someone tried a high-tech/on-line shopping approach to groceries up here. It didn't pan out and folded. The guys setting up this business where computer savy but had little awareness and insight into the way people work. They set it up so people wouldn't have to deal with any people at all...completely automated...and it failed for that very reason, go figure.
It seems people (often, not always) enjoy the personal experience and social interaction of getting out of the house. I know I do. I don't love shopping at all but I don't mind buying groceries at my local store at all. Not too busy, reliable place, needed necessities...not consumerism really.
Here's an idea....automate boxing day sales....yeah!! that one I would maybe buy into;):D

And then the Hackers get in!

Phishing around in your food, and by the time the DHS folks get involved (We are NOT monitoring, keywording or wiretapping!), you can kiss your order goodbye.

Some Polish hacker will have it sent to Hong Kong, via Pakistan through India (Bell), and have it eaten on your ticket!

After that you'll get emails for the next 3 years from the people (that hacked the hackers,) who always send you deals on Viagra, Fast women and fancy cars or the "Sweepstakes" saying, you ARE a Million dollar winner but first we want you to order a supply of food from your favorite food distributor in order to qualify, (that's right...) the same location you started at in the first place!

Or your computer simply locks up whith a "401" error, while you are entering your request.(or worse...you have Vista! (can't find it!)))

I think I'll get it and cook it myself!

Relying on computers and internet to feed you? Not a chance! It is a malfunction waiting to kill you.:D

Other than that?....the idea is ok, just having fun:rolleyes:

On your machine maybe. Mine? very very slim chance if any at all. The good ones that can do it have bigger fish to fry. They wouldn't waste their efforts on something that is 1: hard to do and 2: not a big return on investment.

Naaaaah!!

Some do it just for FUN!

Have you ever noticed that since the oh....386's, the net speed has slowed by fractions?
the computers of today are 1000000000>> faster,... but work slower than they did then!

I can just feeeeeeel the malfunctions building due to overloads, and food is not a thing to have on order when kaka connects with fan.

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

In a world where McDonalds screws up your drive through order 2 out of 3 times, I find it hard to believe that this "shopping by online order" would work any better. Especially seeing as the people packing the boxes are probably the same grade/quality people stuffing hamburgers in bags at the McDonalds drive through.

Picking out meat, poultry, and produce is something I want to do myself, not leave up to some high school kid who never went food shopping before in his life.

Not being in the store prevents you from seeing all the choices for a given product, being able to read labels and judge the quality of the product when packaged so you can see the product.

Re: Would you buy your grocery here if..........

I met my wife at the grocery store, she was a cashier in the quick check line, I went out with a couple checkers back then.

It may work for some items, but others I'd rather pick out myself, so if I'm inside anyhow, I might as well pick it all myself.
