Re: Would you pay $500 for this 25 footer?

* As for getting a "new" motor that ain't exactly local... The following will sound crazy, but it worked for me... When the wife and I wanted to buy our boat, it was 180 - 200 miles away... So we started thinking about who we knew that was half way in between us and the boat. We came up with my wife's step mother. She was about 100 miles away. The owner dropped it off at her place, and we came up and picked it up. (We really should have a "Pony Express" forum for guys who have to travel with trucks.) Anyway, at this point, the wife and I look at ALL boats regardless of the location. As soon as we see something we like, we break out "Google Earth" and try to figure out who we know that's close to the find. You promise folks a few boat rides and give 'em a few bucks for gas, and they're friends forever. (And that's how it should be.)

Funny you should say that, cause over the summer I have called everyone in every state I know and told them I might need them to pick up stuff that I might buy off ebay or craigslist. But where I see all the good deals I know absolutly nobody.

Hi KeepNItReel,

Funny you should say that, cause over the summer I have called everyone in every state I know and told them I might need them to pick up stuff that I might buy off ebay or craigslist. But where I see all the good deals I know absolutly nobody.

Yeah, it works out that way sometimes... We've been lucky. I live on Cape Cod, but I work online and my boss is in MN. I've got an old co-worker in CA. My wife has relatives scattered all over the U.S. My brother is in RI... My ex (still on good terms) is in Virginia... And so forth. But like you say... Just when you find the perfect deal, you don't really have a way to get to it... Maybe a friend of a friend of a friend could snag the motor and relay it your way, but who knew.

This raises the whole different issue of social networking which doesn't belong here... I'm going to see if I can't kick it over to a new thread...

I don't think Bertram made any outboard hulls in 1970. They made I/Os or strait drives. That would make yours a conversion. Do some research before you leap as many have not been happy with the results of conversions.

Bertrams were the best money could by back then. I worked for them for a short time in 1966 and whatever went below the deck or behind the bulkhead was as good a quality as what the customer could see.

Thanks for the info. I have not heard back from the seller so am assuming it might be sold already, which might be a good thing for my marriage.

Hey John, thanks for the ebay link, I saw that one too and it is about 260 miles from me one way. That's a drive I can do on a weekend. But looks like there won't be anything to put it on :(
