I'm more afraid of sitting on my porch in retirement and saying "man I wish I had tried that" than I am at failing at what it is I want to try.

Lot's of great stories here, most with the same theme. Looks like you got your answer.

I have one left at home to support, and after that we (my wife and I) plan to sell off, become itinerant bums, with a boat if possible, and just get the heck off the treadmill.

I doubt that I will slow down. I have a lot of ideas/projects that I want to play with. My wife who knows me well had a workshop for me in her list of priorities. She actually came up with the idea to get a rural lot, put up a fairly good sized pole building with electrical, water and sewerage service, and back up a motor home into it for living quarters.

My will reads "Being of sound mind and body, I spent it all."

i owned my own tattoo shop for ten years,,good money, easy money, cash money, then when my lil boy started school i sold it so i would be able to see him ,,tat shop has late hours and saturdays are mandatory, even if you own it[and want money],,,went back to doing underground telephone which is what i had done for years before owning the shop,,i like digging on the backhoe, directional boring etc,,,and really just love being outside all the time,,,being couped up in a building or warehouse was torture after being outside ,,,i dont regret anything,,,,,,,so if you have any interesting chances in life,i say take it ,,,if not life threatening

My dream is to be a professional bass fisherman. The odds of being succesful and making enough money to keep it going are very much against me. I'm single with no kid but have student loans, mortagage and other financial obligations that have to be taken care of.
Do you know how many would like to be in your situation? Sell the house pay off the debts and GO FOR IT.
I'm still young but getting old in a hurry. Like puddle jumper said "Life is to short not to live but you also need to look out for your future". I can go for it but if I don't make it, my future is shot. My dad also worked very hard all of his life and passed away at 61. I'm not sure if he got a chance to do what he really wanted to.
Reread what you just said.
I hate making life's big decision.
Welcome to life.:D

I would strongly advise those that would like to be in my situation to rethink their wish. :D
So, if and when someone buys my house and my debts are paid. I'm GOING FOR IT! :D even if I fail. The only shame is in failed to try right?

Simple...phase one in while you are phasing the other one out. No need to go immediate full house on something that you aren't sure about yet.;)
Work it up as a hobby...evenings and Saturday or afternoons, etc. The more you like it the more you will do it and then the results and path will come.
When you are ready...simply resign your old post or see if you can go 'part time'. A lot of companies these days welcome that...saves them full time employee overhead while affording you time to do the 'other thing'.
Good luck, and keep us posted!!

Some good news,In the 80s I built my business on failure and often (ok a lot) and we became very large in a short time (8 years) sold the business(after about 12 years) came back 5 years later built another business in 4 years by remembering all the failures. One of the best learning tools there is "Is Loosing Money" you may not remember how you made all your money but you never forget how you lost it

there are probably many of us here who have thought about it and some who have done it but, you have to make the choice yourself.
begin by getting rid of any debt you may have. save up a nice cushion. then begin to dabble in it on time off.
you said you have to learn the field, could you train on weekends?

most importantly talk it over with your family. if they understand the goals and challenges involved and agree to "go for it" then make the jump.

In todays economy, you have to be especially screwed up to leave a good paying job for one that pays less, regardless of whether you like it or not. Just sounds totally irresponsible. Especially in light of the recent health care bill passed.
