Reman 4.3 OMC

Just finished breaking in a new (reman) 4.3 motor. I used straight 30w oil (cant remember the brand) during this time with a K&N filter. Getting ready to do the first oil change. Would you switch over to synthetic now? Too late? Or just keep running a good 30w oil. Thanks for any input.

I would run another batch of mineral oil, your engine is still very new, allow it a little more time make sure everything is broken in. Then switch to synthetic. You will probably get some nay sayers, but synthetic is the way to go. Superior product to conventional based oils.

Have a great day,

Rob.

thanks for the reply, you're probably right. Maybe the better question would be could I do any damage or cause any leak issues if I switched to synthetic...

If you do switch to synthetic, wait at least until 100hrs.

And when would you recommend it?

Have you ever had a customer come back because they're running thru synthetic oil because it has taken so long for their engine to break-in?

I take it by this quote that you are a mechanic for a living?

It shouldn't take an engine 100 hours to break in, thats insane. Isn't the standard break in time around 3 hours +-1? Geez....my 79 only has 42 hours on it, I guess it isn't broken in yet :p

My brand new BAYLINER 185 says 20 hours to break in in the MERCRUSER manual!

they ALSO SAY the #1 oil they recomend is Synthetic and thats exactly what I plan on using after I do my 1st oil change as well. My BMW only gets Synthetic and comes from the factory with synthetic so if its good for beemer is definetly good for mercruser.

Mercruser suggests using 40W oil and I assume its becuase your reving the **** out of these engines a lot longer then they normally would in a car or truck so Im sticking to the recomendaiton and going with 40W synthetic.

Presently, no. But did turn wrenches for 15 years, with an ASE Master Mechanic certification.

The break-in period is just my suggestion, take it or leave it. This is a reman engine, who did the reman and what was the quality of parts that were used?

Would you buy a new BMW and after 3 hours of driving consider your engine to be past its break-in period?

Re: Would you switch to synthetic after break in?

I used to use synthetic on my motor, and changed it every third year whether it needed it or not. In its 17th year, it failed due to improper winterization. This is a typical failure mode. Recreational boat motors generally don't wear out. They fail due to improper winterization, bad impeller, or something similar. I will use synthetic on this rebuild when I change the oil this fall. I need something to offset accumulated fuel and moisture in the oil after 3 years!

Re: Would you switch to synthetic after break in?

i change my oil every 20 hours. I use plain ol 30 weight. I had synthetic n my vehicles and really noticed no benefit to using them. 95% of the people get rid of their vehicles LONG before using a synthetic oil pays off. I jsut use good ol regular oil. i change my oil every 3/3000 on my vehicles. if something is gonna happen to your motor I dont care if god himself poured in the oil its gonna go its gonna go. yeah there probably are some benefits to using synthetic. I had synthetic oil on my dakota since it was NEW. at 72000 miles the motor took a crap. my 1989 GMC sierra has had nothing but valvoline 10-30 ( regular oil) in it since it was new and it has 320 000 miles on the original motor which has NEVER been apart or messed with in any way.

I`m not going to tell you what to do but here is a real life example. I saw with my own eyes an engine pick up 250 RPMS by going to KLOTZ oil. I`m no fan of wasting money I still use mineral oil and have never in my life had an engine failure do to oil problems. I will be going to KLOTZ next season thats for sure.
