Would you use this coil?

Replaced original Mercury coil 392-805570 with a Sierra coil 18-5438. Mercruiser lists the coil for my motor as part no. 392-7803A4 (primary resistance .6-.8, secondary resistance 9,400-11,700), which cross references to the same Sierra 18-5438. The resistance values I am getting out of the Sierra (1.0 primary, 8,100 secondary) do not fall into the specified range so I was thinking about going back to the old one. However, there is a small crack by each of the posts. Is this an issue? Are the resistance values that important?

Thanks!

It may just be your meter. Hard to measure 0.2 ohm differences. What brand/model meter are you using?

Yes unless you have a micro-ohm meter, I don't see how you could read such low resistance accurately. Try another ohm meter for the secondary value and see. JMHO

I appreciate the responses. I am using a cheap Etekcity meter. To get the secondary I set it on 20k and get 10.04k, 200k gives me 10.0k and 2000k give me 10k. For the primary I set it on 200 and get 1.1, but just touching the probes together gives me .5, so I am subtracting that from the 1.1 to get the .6 primary value.

I have a higher quality unit on order, so I will be making some comparisons when I get it.

I wouldn't trust that meter for anything but ballpark numbers.

I agree about the meter. That original coil is usable if you use a very thin dremel disc and grind the crack out slightly, then fill it with a high quality resin or 2 part epoxy.... It would be excellent as a spare (or test unit)...
