Did it occur to you that the reason they might not sell lobster licenses is because your population/ sizes are down and they need them to recover?

This is very true! There are many species of marine life that are in decline on the east coast from overharvesting/overfishing!

SBL,

There's a lot more to lobster fishing than buying a license and some pots and dropping them over the side of the boat. Lobster fishing is very competitive.

Commercial lobster fishermen are very territorial! They all have their own areas that they fish, these areas are agreed on with the other lobsterers and no one fishes someone else's area. People have been shot at and shot and killed for violating this oral contract!

I'm not saying you'll get shot at or shot, but there's a good chance you'll go out to check your pots one day and they won't be there.

Just sayin'.

Why don't you read the regulations instead of asking. Look up the answer!

+1! Relying on "word of mouth" can really get you into trouble sometimes!

Sorry if Im out of line here but I thought the forum was a place to go when you have a question about something. I dont know how many times Ive heard look it up or been made feel dumb for asking a question eveyone else seams to know the answer to. I agree that when it comes to local regulations word of mouth could cause a problem but this forum is where people go for there answers. If we were going to jus look it up somewere other than here wouldnt we just be on another forum?

smallboatlover next time your at your local tackle shop they most likeley have a coppy of your local fishing regs. Good luck dealing with those fisherman up your way, the only guys that crazy about fishing around here are the mullet fisherman and I dont care for mullet so that dosnt bother me. I asked one of the mullet fisherman around here what the steal cage around his motor was for and he told me it was to protect his motor from being ramed by another mullet boat, crazy aint it?

One of the great things about computers, the internet, and fishing! You now have your state fishing regulations at your finger tips.

The answer to SBL's crab question is here:

http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bnatres/fishwild/mfsizes.htm

I find it ridiculous for anyone to ask questions about the regulations for the waters they fish! Everyone should read their regulations at least once a year, more often if they're forgetful!

Ignorance of the law and "I didn't know" won't save you from getting a ticket and fine.

What comic book did you get your info from?

No one has ever been shot here, fist fights, yes. There is no territorial boundaries between the lobster men. There are a million traps along our cities coast not counting the coastline of the state, you can practically walk on them in the summer, they cross over each other and when they do you will be cut. There is an understanding in certain areas how you will set your traps, east to west, north to south etc: and if you break the trend you will lose traps, could be costly since traps cost approximately 90 bucks per trap when adding the cost of trap, rope and bouy and then add the cost of bait.

If you are a recreational lobster fisher man with limited pots 5-10, it is cheaper to buy lobsters from a commercial boat at about 5 bucks a lobster. When you live along the coast everyone wants to try their hand at lobstering.

Does this look like a comic book to you?

You are taking one incident, making it sound like it is rampart up and down the coast.

I can understand that happening in Maine, "why do you think they call them Maniacs." :)

Re: wow there really tough in ri?

Maybe people are nicer in Gloucester? Here on Narragansett Bay, I know a guy who decided to try his hand a quahoging while in college. He was doing his thing when a commercial quahog fisherman showed up and asked him why he was there. My friend told the quahog fisherman how he couldn't get a good summer job and he needed money for college so he was going to try his hand at quahogging. Well the quahog fisherman started playing with his very large 44 magnum revolver. He told my friend how he should move on as this was not his area. He said how my friend might get hurt and could wind up dead. He said my friend might have an "accident" unless he moved on. My friend left.

jigngrub only mentioned people have been shot and killed; there was no mention of it happening all the time. He even writes "I'm not saying you'll get shot at or shot". He can you interpret that as "rampart" (rampant)?

SBL is not worried about getting shot at. His dad taught him how to row faster than a speeding bullet by taking the plug out and shooting at him. No...wait...that's not right. He shot at him while he pulled the plug, and then rowed away. No...that's not it either. He shot the plug at the roadway. Oh forget it. He has to get his boat to float first anyway.

And SBL thought the lobstermen were rough.
