Wrong leaf spring?

This is an older single axle EZ Loader trailer with rollers. Are these the wrong sized leaf springs? The shackle bolt doesn't go through the loop at the end. Its the same on both sides. I noticed it when I pulled the wheel/hub to work on the hydraulic brakes. It hasn't caused any problems (that I know of) but it just doesn't look right to me.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Chris

That's a slipper spring and the loop "slips" on the bolt as the axle moves up and down.

Seeing the rust, you should check the bolt condition. They wear from the sliding back and forth. Often the bolt goes through a bushing so the bolt doesn't wear.

And make sure the Delrin / plastic roller (around bolt) is still intact.
Spring could be worn out as well. Springs get longer as the chamber collapses over time.

How do you tell if the spring is "worn out"? Any advantage or disadvantage of the slipper spring over a "traditional" leaf spring? Thank you!

Springs are measured by length and depth.

As springs wear they get longer in length and shorter in height. Typically get a stress fracture in the “stack” before they wear out.

My spring looked good on casual inspection. Removed a spring to replace the delrin roller and the ends of two leafs fell out on the ground. Who knows how long they had been broken. Found three of the four springs had failed in this manner
