wrong rotation on merc 1150

I recently bought a boat that has a mercury 1150. The engine runs great except that when the control box at the consol is in forward the prop turns in reverse and visa versa. I have checked the control box and the cables and linkages at the engine. They all seem to be in perfect working order, and the prop is definately a right hand prop. All things seem to point to the foot being a counter rotating foot. However, mercury (and everyone else I talk to) says that this is impossible. I was wondering if a mercury 1150 lower unit could be converted or assembled wrong to give results like I have. In particular, I was wondering about the shift cam and if it could be installed backwards.

The control box needs to have the cables reopisitioned to reverse the shift pattern

If the shifter arm on the motor itself moves all the way forward for forward gear, and all the way back is reverse, there is nothing wrong with the motor; and the problem will be in the control box as suggested.

I think you will find that some types of control boxes push rather than pull the cables or visa-versa. Sounds like the control box is not compatible with the motor. There may be a way of re-configuring the existing control box to work properly but you will need to partially dissassemble to investigate.

Thanks for the responses. The control box is always the first thing to be suspected. I have personally looked in the control box to see if it could be changed, and have firmly convinced myself on two occasions that it cannot. However, it certainly seems possible that it may not be the right control box for my engine. I can say that the shifter arm on the motor rotates toward the rear (in the direction of the prop) for foward and rotates toward the front of the motor (in the direction of the bow) for reverse. (as you are looking down on the motor from the top) Is this the right phase of rotation for the model 1150?

If the shift linkage on the motor doesn't move fwd. for fwd. and back for rev, someone has put the shift cam in the lower unit upside down

No.... this is 100% backwards. Back to the controller you go.

-W

IT'S NOT THE CONTROLLER! At some point someone serviced the waterpump impeller and misaligned the shift rod where it connects to the coupler. It's a common occurance and easily fixed. Drop the unit, set both the motor and control box in "FORWARD" gear position (prop rathets clockwise) and reassemble.... Be sure to grease the driveshaft splines before putting it back in...

- Scott

Chinewalker probably has it right, I've heard of this happening before.
