Hello Dhadley

I recently bought a stiletto SS prop 14.25x15
(RPM's now 5800 and gained about 2 mph-42.5mph WOT)

I had been using an OMC 15x17 SS
(RPM's were 5400 and was 40 mph WOT)

Anyway, since the new prop is a smaller diameter how can I be sure that the prop is not slipping or over-ventilating. When running about 32 mph and trimmed up it doesn't sound quite the same as the old prop. It sounds like it sucking more air, although not too much air because it's not cavitating.

Right now when trimmed up the ventilation plate is about 1-1/2 to 2 inches above the water.

Does all this sound o.k. to you?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds real good. The slip % is almost unbelievable. The motor should be real happy at that rpm too. Was the speed per a gps?

Your holeshot should have improved as well.

Congrats!

The MPH's are both per a Garmin GPS Chartplotter 232.

Old prop - 40 MPH

New Prop - 42.5 MPH

The hole shot is REAL quick for a 23' deep-v Wellcraft. It actually feels like I'm getting more horsepower. If I keep launching the boat out of the hole I think the guys that fish with me are goinig to find a new driver. :D

One more thing. When I received the new prop (the thrust plate side of the prop) the hub was a little off center. When I torqued the prop down to 60lbs-70lbs per instructions it seems to have properly centered itself. I guess this is normal. However, I'll never get another 60lbs-70lbs of torque on the nut because if i do then the crown nut will be advanced to far on the shaft for the cotter pin to be installed properly. So I just put the prop on tight enough to install the cotter pin correctly.

Is the prop installed tight enough?

Thanks again for the previous info.

I would say its OK. Just make sure the front isnt rubbing on the gearcase. Once you ran the prop the hub should "seat".

Actually the only time you need the nut is if you slow down real fast or when you go into reverse. If you ever ran without a nut you can still run in forward. The prop is always advancing toward the front. But once you select reverse, you will never feel it go into gear. Then youre done until you put on another prop. Trust me on this one....

The prop is turning freely and is not rubbing on the gearcase when turned out of the water...I'll take the prop off and make sure that it isn't rubbing under load.

Thanks again.
