I called Tech support over at Evinrude.

I just called there..866 number just to see what type of answer I would get. Looking for opinions.

Here is the convo:

Me: I see Walmart has XD-25 oil there at like 19.83 for their oil verses what I can get even the XD-30 for around 27.00

Evinrude Tech: Yes Walmart is the only ones that are selling it.

Me: Can I use it in all your engines.

Evinrude Tech: I can only answer questions for motors from 1997 on.

Me. Ok can I use it in motors from 1997 and on?

Evinrude Tech: XD-25 is a TCW-3 oil.

Me: Well I see the XD-25 is red..the XD-30 is red..is it the same thing?

Evinrude Tech: Color can change.

Me: Can I use this cheap oil in all your engines that you can talk about? And if so will it cause any damage?

Evinrude Tech: Yes and No.

Me: yes frist question..No to the later correct?

Evinrude Tech: Yes.

** The End **

Now for me I have a 1986 Johnson GT150 which runs great and loves to drink gas and oil. From what I have experienced..the XD-25 seems to put out a bit more smoke at lower rpms or when it idles..yet the oil appears to be just fine.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Don

Many of us bought Pennzoil Semi Synthetic oil at $7.00/gal last winter at WalMart. There is no need to pay $20/gal for TCW3. In the late '90's I used Cabela's semi synthetic but they gradually increased their price until it is now $19.00 a gallon but is availble at $14.00 on sale periodically.

XD-25 is Johnson/Evinrude Oil. I just found it at Walmart for less than 20 bucks at Walmart.

Re: XD-25 Oil..I called Evinrude

The XD-25 does seem to put out more smoke probably due to the fact that it is not a synthetic blend it may also contribute to a little bit more carbon build up. I have great luck with the synthetic blend XD-50 or Pennzoil Synthetic blend in my 99 Johnson 115. My Johnson dealer says I can use the XD-25 with no problem though.

If you do much trolling or work your motor hard I would personally recommend something that is a synthetic blend.

Just so y'all know, XD-25 has not been made for at least 4 years. It was replaced by XD-30 which has a slightly different formulation and has the latest (RL) rating in front of the TC-W3 certification number.

just curious, why is the synthetic so much better? is it lack of ash? also, do you feel it's worth the extra cost on outboards less than 30 hp?
thanks,

Re: XD-25 Oil..I called Evinrude

I have just spoken to my Evinrude dealer and they are telling me that other XD-25 XD-30 Penzoil etc or WalMart stuff does not have the cleansing additives, so best to stick with Evinrude/Johnson name brand. Dealer price for 2.5 gal container is $58.00 and a refill is $52.00 = $20.80 gal. Why take a chance............I want to be sure I am using the best stuff possible.......

When you call Evinrude tomorrow, ask them why none of their oils are listed as being licensed to use the TC-W3? logo by NMMA, even though they're using it. See the "Certified" oils list (www.nmma.org).

I knew this might cause a stir talking about oil again. XD-25 has the Johnson/Evinrude name on it. Just I can only find it at Walmart.
