xr-2 150 hp timing

can someone please tell me the procedure and specs for setting the timing on an 1981 merc xr2 150. i still have no go prob when in water. replaced stater w/high perf. stater replaced switch boxes with high perf. boxes, rebuilt carbs, compression is 130 lbs on all cylinders. motor runs great on land. but in water will not go on plane just boggs

Hello wrenchtrnr72,<br /><br />If you're going to tackle a job like this, then do yourself a very big favour and buy the service manual. They don't cost a lot and the information you get is priceless. You'll need to give us the serial number of your engine as the XR-2 was only produced in 1985, 1986, 1987.<br /><br />Chris..........

I doubt timing iz your problem. Have you tried bumping the primer switch when engine "boggs"?<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

my serial # is 5503559. i did try pumping primer ball annd even pushing cold start injector, that made it bog even worse?

Wrenchtrnr,<br /><br />Your motor is 1980. It does sound like a carb/timing sync problem. Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the 3 pages from the manual.<br /><br />Chris..........

my e-mail is wrenchtrnr72@msn.com. info would be helpful for me to keep on file. mu friend use to race mercs, he had me back in water with boat on trailer tied down, and checked everything under a load. he played with timing and trigger and other things, stuff i need to learn! wook boat to lake today(7/5/04) and i 'bout made a mess in my droors!!! boat ran 75 mph!!!!! i am the happiest man in the world now!
