Ok I'll check it out in the morning! I need to get an impeller kit, thermostats, poppet valve set, and rectifier. Not sure if all of those parts the same for black max 150 xr4. I was reading somewhere that xr4 150's were only from 88-92

xr4 was built from '87 ta '91... tha '91 was built on whats known as a "fat block".... its a 2.5 style block that is actually a piston port 2.4.... u need ta know for sure on year cause of type reg/rec, stator used.... some '89's and all '90/91's have a water cooled combined 40 amp reg/rectifier, stator... earlier used 16 amp stuff... pump, t-stats, poppet all tha same.........

Thank you so much for your help. I found a number at the base of number two near the advance arm. It says 010989. So I'm guessing that means 01/09/89. But now when I try to get parts online everyone asks for serial numbers. I know now all the cooling system parts interchange but want to get the rectifier.

That would be awesome! From what I gathered from memory I think the impeller kit is a 18-3314. The thermostats are 18-3553. The poppet valve set I wasn't sure on. And I don't think it's water cool I don't see any lines going to it just wires. I don't have a manual. I might get one now knowing the year.

I appreciate your help so much thank you this helps a lot! One other thing I want to do is remove the advance boxes. Ok the top of number 2 there's one that says advance module. There's another small box with 2 posts. I've read to remove them and set crank time at wot at 21 degrees. Have you done this before? Also if so do you need to jump any wires ?

tha small one with exposed terminals is regulator.. it stays... module with a white/black and red/white can go away.. tha white/black "may" have "joint" made in tha sleeve before it gets to tha term on tha switch boxes...same wire goes to both switch boxes... you will need to make a short jumper that will replace it between tha two switch boxes... 21* will be fine..

The advance box has a red, white and black wire. I'll remove that box. Looking at it. The regulator has no wires hooked up to it! I was going to replace the rectifier due to the tach wasn't working and and the system wasn't charging but now looks like I might have other problems.

with tha 16 amp stuff as long as you use quality equipment and good batt maintance, it won't hurt a thing...
