How do you change the fuel pump in a Mercury 2001 XR6? And How do I get to my intakes to spray the carbs down? Need specific details on both.

Fuel pump takes a kit. Instructions come with the kit. You replace the membrane, gaskets, and check valves.

Spraying stuff on the carbs does nothing except risk the integrity of the engine bearings. If the carbs need work, you need to put them on the bench and put a gasket kit in them. Getting them off is pretty easy.

If you work on the carbs, you'll need to do a linkage and timing adjustment procedure.

Best bet is to quickly get the Mercury Service manual for that engine. It's all in the book.

The devil's in the details. Everything is pretty simple to work on, but different than a lawn mower or car engine. An example of devilish is a bad carb base gasket can easily cost a piston. 2 cycle engines rely on fuel mix for cooling.

hope it helps

John, You are assuming he wants to clean the inside of the carbs. If he wants to clean the outside of the carbs, you better tell him how to remove the airbox.

If he can't figure that out, he has no business under the hood.
