How did your exhaust shutters look? The old one piece design would fall off and lodge down there, eventually eating a hole.

do you boat in salt water?

since the part was designed to last 15 years and its going on 35 years, not bad actually.

excessive water in the bilge . I install a small 500gph at the very stern and turn it on as I power up.

Had the same thought, BT. It looks like the corrosion is external judging by the stuff around the hole.

That I doubt but you never know how good the grade of aluminum was that they used. My '88 Cobra has sat with salt water in the Y pipe all season on the mooring approx. 15 years! Might have been a casting flaw/air bubble, weak spot that just corroded through as the rest of it does not look bad. Not sure if this helped but I always filled the exhaust with AF with corrosion inhibitors each winterization yes a lot of it runs out after the manis are full but maybe enough remains at the bottom to help.

Mine "cancered" out just like yours due to rotten transom which allowed salt water to continuously coat y pipe and inner transom assembly. Former owner may have never flushed/rinsed with fresh h20 either. If 1986, I'd check for rot. If rot, the work really begins. I am putting my 86 SR together and thank God I labeled all wires. Good luck! Start searching ebay for freshwater used y pipe.

I’d definitely try that out on every winterization , also checked for rot and is not present looks solid ,

Do you commonly have some water in the bilge? Like enough the bilge comes on once a week? Common issue is the steering pin leaks at the top and the water seeps down and drips off the bottom of the Y-pipe. Every Y-pipe I have seen has some corrosion exactly at the bottom two mount points.

Not likely I have water in the bilge , but after removing the Y pipe and check for possible leaks I found some corrosion next to the trim pump manifold where the two hoses connect to , my believe is the there was a small intrusion there enough to corrode the Y pipe on the long run. seal replaced only waiting for the new Y pipe , and also installed a second bilge pump just in case.
