Hi to all,

Need some help on buying a replacement Shutter (exhaust flapper) on the y-pipe since I'm missing one.

Boat Information:
Bayliner 2355,
Year:1995
Motor: 5.0L
Drive: Alpha 1

Y-pipe oem number: 815786-C 8R I'm not 100% sure about the "8R" it is hard to make out.

The risers seem to be 4" , That is by comparing them to pictures of a 3" and 4" riser. The riser looks exactly like a 4".

Elbow : # 14801-C and right under that number is SG4218 (hard to make out) The elbow that connects to the boot that is connected to the Y-pipe.

Boot: #32-44348 That is the boot that connects the elbow to the y-pipe..

My question is, can anyone tell which Shutter model number I have to order?
Even here on Iboat there is a couple to choose from.

I do have pictures of all the pieces mentioned above but can't find a way to attach them.

Thanks for the help in advance

If more info is needed please let me know

Re: Y-Pipe (Flapper and Shutter) Replacement question

Tiger, I had a flapper fail on my '88 4.3LX Alpha I. When I went to the dealer for a replacement, he told me it was not necessary to replace it. His contention was that most often they were unnecessary, as the risers had enough vertical space to keep the water out, without a flapper. I never replaced it and never had an issue.

It was on a 19' SeaRay Sorrento Bowrider, BTW.... if your boat is really low in the back, and the motor sits low, you may want to install risers between the manny and the elbow for extra security.

If you post your engine serial #, Don S will probably know exactly which one you need......;)

Go to

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser_parts.asp

have model and serial #'s handy, look up the factory parts then check with iboats or sierra to cross ref #'s, IF available aftermarket.

I can only partially agree with the previous statement of NOT using the shutter, but then again, I'm NOT willing to risk someone else's engine to a rogue following wave.

Re: Y-Pipe (Flapper and Shutter) Replacement question

On my engine, I had two options, the original shutters with rubber retainers or new drop-in shutters with plastic flanges that don't need retainers. The Merc. brand, drop-in units, purchased locally at a dealer, were about half the price of the other style, aftermarket brand, purchased on-line, excluding shipping; and they are easier to install. My local shop also had them in stock. Check your dealer and bring your serial number. They aren't always the most expensive

That s exactly what I wanted to do was compare prices, but I don't the piece number.
Would of liked to shop online, so far prices have been alot cheaper than at any deal in my neck of the woods......

807166A 3 is the part number for the shutter kit.
But, like Charlie B mentioned. If you go to Mercs Parts express and look up the proper part number and suggested retail price. you will have to put in a zip code and choose a dealer, but you don't have to order from them.
