Y pipe hole?

Re: Y pipe hole?

Once we noticed the amount of water in the engine compartment, we manually turned the bilges on. At that point, there was water reaching the very bottom of the batteries. The stream coming from the bilges was like a garden hose running. We actually had used a children's bucket to a get the water out. I have no idea how long it took for that much water to get in but, it was probably over an hour or so. Remember that we were sitting on a beach with large boats going by and creating large waves against the back of the boat.

Now that there appears to be "white" in my gear lube resovouir, I am thinking something else.

Thanks everyone for your help. It for sure is the y pipe. I backed it into the water and immediately I could see and hear water coming through the bottom of the y pipe. It was very clear that is where it was from.

It will be fixed on Friday. Thanks again.

That is right where transom rot starts letting water in, I hope it is what you think it is and not a soggy rotted thru transom.

I will make sure that he checks that tomorrow. I understand that a y pipe leak is pretty common. I would think that if it was a transom leak that you would see a rotted area from the out drive side of the transom as well.

You probably wouldn't since the outside is a rather thick layer of fiberglass.

That's unrelated to your current problem.....You should however change your drive oil and clean out your reservoir if you didn't at the end last season on in the last couple of years.

Do you know when the drive was last removed and your drive bellows/U-joints/alignment checked?

I hope it is not that either. He will check for that I am sure. He did say that it can be common but, not really in something this age. I know it is 15 years old but, according to him, he would not expect that.

I did feel below the y pipe where the water was leaking and I think i did feel a opening in the pipe.

If that's true, you'll be replacing it. Buy one of those new ones from ebay unless the shop can find you another one cheaper.....

Re: Y pipe hole?

Ok men, I have a new problem. It was for sure the "Y" pipe as the mechanic pulled it and there was a large slit in the top of the pipe.

Thinking that the leak was fixed as it was so obvious, we drove two hours to lake Powell. Of course, thinking that the problem was fixed, we did not float test it before leaving. We were just outside of the wake less area and went to take off and the boat will not plane out and will barely get to 3000 RPM's. We normally run at 4000 while planed out and underway. The boat is just laboring.

I open up the engine compartment and it is full of water again and leaking as bad as before. This time however, the temp is now jumping up to 220 (normally runs at 160). At first, I would have thought it was the impeller but, that was changed a couple of months ago and has been running just fine. I was thinking frozen or stuck thermostat but, that was also replaced.

I am really confused as to why all of a sudden I have no power, not to mention, where the leak is coming from.

We have run water through the engine and there are no apparent leaks there. When it is backed into the water, it leaks immediately.

I can't understand the rise in temp either.

My only guess is that the water got high enough to slosh around and come in contact with the spark plugs? Besides the leak, these are simply problems that we did not have until they worked on the boat and fixed the "Y' pipe

So I have:

1. Same major leak even after y pipe replaced.

2. Rise in temp (when water is high in engine compartment, not when just running water through engine).

3. Loss of power when water high in compartment (has to be something more than added weight from water).

Any ideas????

You MAY want to consider changing mechanics .......
