Y-Pipe Leaking?

I know I have to remove the engine to repair the leak...no problem I?m going to take this to opportunity replace/repair lots of goodies?but I want to do this right & safe, I?ve done lots searches & reading but I still have a couple of questions.

Pulling the engine: Build a gantry (something like the one Imannyr built) or hire a tow truck

Engine stand: 1 ton or 2 ton...best type

Engine leveler: Do I really need one?

Engine Hoist: 1 ton or 2 ton...even if I go with the tow-truck, I?m thinking of using a hoist connect to the truck?s lift for a smoother engine lift. What do you guys think.

I do understand that 2-ton would be(Should be) stronger than 1-ton, but why not save a couple of $$ if a 2-ton is over-kill.

The simple solution is to call around and find someone with an A-frame hoist and tow the boat over with the engine ready to pull, have them pull it, stick it in the back of your pickup, drive home, then use a cherry picker to put it on the floor. Reverse procedure to put it back in.

2 tons is way overkill.Your engine dressed probably weighs less than 1000.Check around some places have cherry pickers large enough to pull engines from boats.They are the ones you actually tow behind a vehicle.I've used them several times.Another way is to remove the wheels from the trailer and set it down low on blocks.

Just did this a few months ago. I used a tow truck and took about 30 minutes, due mainly to having to remove the coupler and flywheel to mount it to the engine stand.

No need to get a chain hoist, the tow truck can lift very slow if needed.

Engine leveler is nice, particularly when reinstalling.​

Guys thanks for the feed-back?.I decided to build my own gantry out of wood, I?ll try to post some pics.

I?m thinking of putting the engine on a ?engine cradle? with wheels, would I have to remove anything from the engine to make it fit the cradle?like motor mounts. Would I be able to remove the oil-pan once the engine is on the cradle, I like to replace the gasket & paint the pan since I got the engine out, I probably do the timing chain cover too.

Its open in the middle for a drip pan. That's what you'll want. You can spin the motor 360 on it. Your not going to want the ones that are shaped like T's.... There not as stable as the wide open ones, plus all your drippies get on the floor :)

Yeap, Y-pipe leaking, totally corroded, only top bolts were basically holding the Y-pipe.

I need some help on which Y-pipe to get. The one I remove has the number 815786-C BR stamped on it, the book, based on the serial-no. of the motor(OF132006) says the pipe should be 807130A4/44262T1. Then I see pipes with the numbered 815786-0 on eBay?what?s up, are all these the same.

807130A 4 is the correct part number for the Y-pipe. It should include new shutters too. The number 815786-0 or 815786 0 or 815786* does not appear to be a valid Mercruiser p/n.​
